Stayed one night in the Step House hotel due to its proximity to Gowran Park racecourse. Borris is a lovely village off the beaten track with a really nice street and some proper old pubs (especially o'sheas). The hotel is family run and I think opened two years ago. Lovely reception area and bar with open fires. Rooms are a good size and well equipped with flat screen tvs, lovely fully tiled bathroom, nice shower but with my pet hate of small towels. Our room had a small balcony with nice views to the mountains in the distance although the nearground view is a little scrappy.
On the night we stayed the hotel was hosting the regional final of the rose of tralee so it was a very late and noisy night - even for us on the third floor - I would imagine this could be an ongoing issue with larger functions in the hotel.
We had dinner in the cellar restaurant which was absolutely first class (chef is ex Chapter 1 in Dublin) Small choice on menu but really inventive cooking. Good and very reasonable wine list.
There is also a nice little cocktail bar for residents on the first floor. Hotel also has fishing rights on the river Barrow.
Overall a really nice short stay and we are hoping to go back in may for a longer stay - its great to see a really nice family run hotel rather than the standard brown hotel. A couple of small faults but made up for by the overall helpfulness of the staff and general feel good ambience of the place.

The Step House Hotel is a fine luxury hotel. Beautifully decorated from the lobby, the restaurant and the rooms. The rooms were spacious and have stunning views over the mountains.
Staff at the Step House are amazing, the service we received over the weekend was next to none and deserving of an individual mention was Melissa who welcomed us upon arrival, and was nothing but helpful and extremely courteous.
The food was also cooked to an amazingly high standard and you can choose to eat in either the restaurant or bar, we sampled both and would highly recommend both.
Will certainly be back to boris!

Everything about this hotel deserves praise. The food was delicious, the room, spacious, the view from the balcony breath-taking and as for the bathroom-definitely the wow factor!. The staff was friendly and pleasant, nothing was too much trouble. It was our first visit to Carlow and to the Step House but we will be back.We felt so relaxed after our two days there.Borris itself is a quaint place.Do go to Egans pub, just down the street.I hope this hotel gets all the business it deserves.
