“Pleasantly surprised.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013 via mobile

Attended a wedding here recently and was so surprised at how nice the place is. Decor is great and whole style of the place is amazing. Room we stayed in was unreal, food for the wedding was second to none. Just overall a fab place. Will agree on wifi isn't great in rooms but its not a major problem.

A surprise. A four star hotel, in the middle of nowhere ....

Actually, the only accommodation in town. Really lovely. Food in the restaurant was wonderful.
All staff - from front desk to restaurant were very professional, friendly and helpful !

However ...... wifi only worked in the common areas...... I couldn't access wifi in my room on first floor. No excuse these days .... in a 4 star hotel, for not having wifi available throughout ..... disappointing ....

Our room was amazing - very spacious, elegantly decorated and spotlessly clean in the quaint village of Borris, Co.Carlow. There was a huge luxurious modern bathroom with a nice array of toiletries. The big balcony had beautiful views out to Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs mountains. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was generous and delicious. We stayed here for a family wedding and we were all very impressed with the accommodation, food and service. We definitely hope to come back and stay again.

Spent a long weekend here recently and had a great time. The venue is beautiful, staff were lovely and friendly all over the hotel, from the breakfast servers to the barmen they went out of their way to make sure everyone was happy. Bedrooms were beautiful with fantastic views and loads of space. The food was fantastic, breakfasts cooked exactly as you wanted and the dinner was gorgeous. Would definitely recommend for a break in the country.

We were very lucky to spent two nights in this country house hotel. It was definitely a step outside the norm on many accounts.
The food and wine in the Rubens restaurant is one of the best we have experienced worldwide. The dirt stains on the green carpet did put us off a bit on entry into the restaurant however we quickly forgot about that once the food and service kicked in! The standard of service, staff attitude and professionalism is above many 5 star leading hotels of the world we've been fortunate enough to stay in.
We must say, after staying here we really were blown away by the fact we only came across this gem by chance after reading Paulo Tulio's review in the Newspaper a while back.
The rooms (which we were kindly shown a selection of by the kind young lady on reception) are a fabulous mixture of classic timeless decor and soft furnishings with a truly ingenious mix of luxury contemporary design throughout. Each bedroom seems to be different and all of the same high 5 star standard (except for some strange reason - if we were to be one bit critical of the bedrooms: there are no flat bed skirts to cover the base of the beds which is a shame as it looks a bit sloppy with the douvet tucked in and the ugly bed base on show?!) but overall both the hotel rooms we saw and the little on-site cottage we were shown was just fab.
The bathrooms were out of this world stunning and roomy also.
TIP: One thing we noticed and a few other guests we got speaking to also commented on a bad and very strong sewage smell around the old part of the house. So not sure if I'd like to have a room near the old cocktail bar due to this. But we didn't get it anywhere else around the hotel.
The main bar do a mean Guinness :-) and food is also great in the bar too.
Gardens were a bit of a let down to be honest as they looked perfect on the website and we had read so much about the beautiful gardens here.... The grass was full of clover and weeds, looked like it needed a good treatment or rotovating which is such a shame as it really lets the rest of the beautiful flowers and plants around it down. The attention to detail with the flowering pots and hanging baskets really are a pleasure on the eye.
Overall this house is an amazing retreat for anyone who appreciates good food and wine with the added bonus of the luxurious accommodation and unique location.

Stayed here just last night after a wedding and what a beautiful hotel it is. Couldnt believe it when i seen our room it was huge and a massive bathroom. Loads of closet space, comfortable beds. Widescreen tv. Lovely staff . Had the beef for dinner and it was perfect. Cant fault the dinner one bit. Breakfast was delicious continental and a full irish. Very tasty. Beautiful location for a wedding. My only fault was that the wifi only worked in the lobby and because the hotel is in such a beautiful rural part of ireland there wasnt great internet or phone coverage signal so really could of used the wifi in the room. However i was only there one night so it wasnt urgent.

Spent one night in Step House and would rush back given half a chance! Lovely room, spotlessly clean (as you would expect), modern furnishings, nice soft decor/colours. General feeling of welcome and friendliness from the staff from check in right through to breakfast. Actually the breakfast staff were especially kind and nice - this is very important as the last impression before you leave is nearly/more important than the first impression... if you follow me. We had a beautiful breakfast, well cooked to order, no feeling of being rushed, plenty of newspapers and coffee provided. Very relaxing. Dinner night before was top class. The gardens are gorgeous for a cocktail and chat to chill out. Overall very unexpected find in a little village in the middle of the country - highly recommended. Highly, highly recommended in fact.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a balcony... next time I'm having one of those!
