Lovley bar, restaurant and goods rooms. Family run hotel for a night or two of r+r in a bit of luxury, with hillwalking or canoeing during the day. It's not even slightly corporate or businessy. And all the better for that.

Minor quibble, it's not cheap...

We stayed in the Step House for a friends wedding, and had a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing stay.
The staff went out of their way to welcome us, and showed us to a huge room in the old part of the house. This was complete with four poster bed, and marble covered bathroom. The room had tea/coffee making facilities as well as bottles of water. It also had the usual necessities if iron, hair dryer etc. Some nice touches were reading material in the form of magazines and books in the room. I only had a quick flick though them, but it gave a very welcoming feel. There also was a large flat screen television hidden in an antique cupboard, with a good selection of Irish/UK channels.

We ate in the function room and the breakfast restaurant. The evening meal was excellent but was wedding food which may not best represent normal menus. But what we ate was delicious and well served. The staff all were friendly, and handled some gregarious wedding guests with wit and charm. Breakfast was a selection of continental and cooked. All to a good standard.

The hotel's cocktail bar was also open (upstairs) with an adjacent terrace. There were roaring fires and a nice atmosphere, with mulled wine and canapés being served.

Overall it was a really nice hotel. I know attending a wedding isn't the exact same as a holiday visit, but based on this visit I'd recommend it and stay there again.

Car parking is available at the back of the hotel. This is a little bumpy, but in no way takes from the hotel.

I have always enjoyed the Step House restaurant but four of us were so disappointed last night. They have changed the way they present their menu so the minimum you get to pay (excluding drinks) is €35 a head and it was definitely not worth it. My meal was cold and the taste just wasn't there. Staff were as good as ever but I don't feel inclined to return in the near future.

This Hotel is a Jewel of the South East with spectacular views of Mount Leinster. On entering the hotel you are met with a friendly greeting; warm cosy log fire with a choice of seating and settee’s to lounge about. You are greeted in the bar area by another inviting log fire. All tables have fresh flowers. The staff were warm, very friendly, courteous, efficient and attentive. Nothing was too much for them. I choose pork shoulder which was absolutely fantastic and delicious. The mashed potatoes were so creamy. My friend chose their home made beef burger which you could not fault. For sweet I had the apple crumble which was served with ice cream and fresh cream, my friend passion fruit cheesecake. This was fine dining at its very best. It was not the first time I have eaten at this hotel and as usual I was not disappointed on this occasion either. There is a lift for disabled and wheelchair people for toilet facilities which were spotlessly clean. I would highly recommend this Jewel of a Hotel for a meal. You will not be disappointed. I certainly will be visiting again.

Room Tip: If you like a table close to the fire book in advance so as not to be disappointed.

Our third visit in so many years. Once again we had a great three days, thanks to Linda in Reception, Kathleen in the restaurant, Mary in the bar and above all our hosts and good friends Cait & James. This hotel is a jewel and others speak of the decor, the food, the views of Mount Leinster. Our enjoyment is especially the people, even down to meeting Aisling & Saoirse in reception as we checked out. As the now infamous Clint Eastwood has said " we'll be back"!!

Room Tip: A room with a view is a must

We came to Borris from Australia for a family wedding. We were most pleasantly surprised ! The staff were most accommodating and very polite. A large group of Aussies taking over cute little Borris for 48 hours, and the staff were all too happy to make us all comfortable! Our room was spacious and gorgeous and overlooked the courtyard and beautiful surrounding countryside. Lovely breakfast, nothing too much trouble...we wished we could have stayed longer!
The wedding reception held here, too, was beautifully done, perfect selections of food and wine, lovely venue and staff. We really wished we didn't have to go so soon!

Room Tip: Gorgeous little gem of a hotel.

I had never been in Borris before and went to the Step House Hotel for the August holiday weekend, on the advice of a friend. It was absolutely great!. Its a beautiful little town, with lovely countryside all around. The hotel itself was lovely and the staff were both efficient and friendly. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Overall a great place to stay. A real hidden treasure, which we will definitely revisit

Room Tip: The hotel is on the side of the main street, but there is parking in the rear.
