nomen est omen! Bosque the paz is a sanctuary of peace, serenity, relaxation in the most beautiful nature right at your door. The rooms are nice and clean. The team is extremely friendly and helpful with all questions and wishes. The kitchen is authentic and the food is excellent and plenty. The paths in the forest surrounding the Lodge are well maintained and easy to walk. A place where you can forget about time and hectic jobs immediately after you arrive. A walk in the orchids garden is an unforgettable experience. The diversity of the animals is unbelievably rich.

We returned to Bosque de Paz after 10 years and found the same unspoiled cloud forest trails, magnificent waterfall, and friendly and knowledgable staff. This is a deeply relaxing and peaceful spot for nature lovers to admire the biodiversity of old-growth forest; to be amused by the visiting coati, agouti and black guan; and to watch the many different hummingbirds at the feeders. If you're lucky you'll also glimpse the resplendent quetzal on a hike up to the waterfall. Definitely worth taking advantage of the private birding guide for an early-morning walk. This is a special place which we highly recommend. (And under 2 hours drive from San Jose airport.)

We loved this place. It's incredibly peaceful and the trails are lovely, even in the pouring rain.

Our room was cosy and comfortable and the food was very good with great vegetarian options. The staff are incredibly helpful and really care about the wildlife and environment around this beautiful place, taking time to point out mammals and birds to guests.

Highly recommended.

This was an amazing place to stay, away from the hustle and bustle to a peaceful tranquil location of birds and wildlife and if you want to see humming birds this is the place to stay. The staff were so lovely it was like being part of a large happy family and everyone was so helpful and enthusiastic. Couldn't fault anything, even the poor weather didn't dampen our stay. Great walks and as we wanted to take lots of bird pictures this ticked the box. The food was true Costa Rican food and was delicious and they catered for my veggie requirements.
Recommended if you want a quiet location and love wildlife/birds.

First, a rider: we came to this hotel from a really amazing hotel; this hotel had been sold to us as providing personalised service, gourmet food, etc; from the comments book and this site, others have loved it. I'm afraid we didn't and cut our stay a night short.

On the plus side, the hotel is in an amazing location and very beautiful. It would have been good to have a map of the trails, though, and info in English.

But ... Another night on those beds would have done our backs in. The food was not gourmet and not particularly nice, and meal times are rigid (12.30 and 6.30), which isn't my idea of a holiday. The decor was tired and old (I liked the toy parrots in our bedroom, but most others wouldnt) and the curtains in our room were broken. The staff were pleasant but we arrived at 2pm and they were a little disinterested.

I spoke to the manager who assured me that the mattresses are orthopaedic. I'm no expert but both our backs were really stiff when we got up.

If you can afford it, the El Silencio up the road is a good option.
