“A trip to Paradise”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We recently spent a week in this amazing place and I feel as if my heart and soul have been renewed. If you want to slow down, connect with nature and be treated like family... this is the place you need to be. We hiked the incredible trails. Each one is unique and well planned... an environmentalists dream world! We ate traditionally prepared delicious meals and sipped wine on the terrace while watching the humming birds dance. The owners and staff are warm and caring. We felt at home and comfortable right away and were treated as valued guests. Never once did I feel like a tourist. No, this is not a hotel... there are enough of those. It was a unique experience... and one that I will treasure forever.

The lodge is simple but not a hotel. More like a prison because there is no choice of food, no menu and you have to eat at 6.30. There is no bar and lights go out at 9pm. The rooms are very basic and are cold in cool season but owner refuses to give hot water bottles or heaters, so come with thick nightwear. Very overpriced for what it is but the redeeming features are the nice staff and the humming birds.

Room Tip: Dont book a room

Dear guest,

We are sorry that you couldn’t enjoy your stay at our hotel. We are a lodge located in the mountains. Cold weather is to be expected because of the area; nonetheless we offer extra blankets in case our guests need them. We always suggest bringing warm clothes to minimize any discomfort anyone might feel due to the weather.

The concept of our hotel is a Natural Reserve, where you can find beautiful trails to hike and a lot of wild life to photograph or just enjoy seeing. Our rooms are designed with local handcraft and minimalistic style, since it is a hotel to relax and be in touch with nature.

At our restaurant, you can enjoy the local cuisine to add that extra touch to the experience. Also if one of our guests has any special request we are more than willing to help and make it happen.

We have just spent a couple of days at Bosque of Paz. I can highly recommend that if you have time head straight here from the airport for your first experience of the wonders of Costa Rica. The hotel is to be applauded for what it has achieved for conservation and it is great that this special place is in such safe and caring hands. The trails are really well marked to allow you to enjoy the wet tropics and cloud forests without the crowds of Monteverde. Hummingbirds abound and we had great sightings of quetzals too. As for what you expect from a good hotel, the rooms are spacious, staff attentive, the lodge very comfortable and the food great. But what makes this place special is that it is a true forest of peace. Rob Dunn, Australia.

I was "Quite Surprised" at this location. My friend and I are nature photographers and are planning to return as soon as possible to capture many more images here at Bosque de Paz! There are so many birds of many varieties !!! Hummingbirds are plentiful, as are many other species. We spotted and photographed more than 40 different species of birds alone, plus, amphibians, insects, flowers (especially orchids)! We were treated like family here! The food was fantastic. The employees were very helpful and even took several opportunities to lead us on the many trails. The owners, Federico and Vanessa are quite the genuinely naturalists that I adore! They even arranged transportation to another lower elevation so that I could photograph even more species of birds and orchids there!

I quite recommend this lodge to anyone who loves nature and good people to enjoy life together!

We came to this lodge to photograph hummingbirds. The birds were there in high numbers - 25 - 50 in sight at all times. But what we also found was an amazing lodge with large, very clean rooms, very nice dining room, very good food with good service. The altitude is nearly 6000 feet, so the weather was cooler than we expected, but well tolerated. The meals are served by waiters, not buffet. The owner greeted us at each meal, and wish God's blessing on us and our families, and a blessing on our meal. This was done very graciously, and taken well by all at dinner. There were nice trails to explore; glasswing butterflies to photograph along the way. Orchids along the way, but not many in bloom at the time we were there. I don't know how much acreage they have, but there is a lot of forest surrounding the lodge, and I don't think anything else is within walking distance.

But the hummingbirds!! Quite a number of species, all over the place. There is a very nice covered deck by the feeders, so that you can watch/photograph under cover. Big covered porches in front of the rooms with places to sit. A nice library too.

Very relaxing, got the best hummingbird photos I have ever shot and had a great time. Don't were anything red unless you want the birds to "drill" you repeatedly. We hated to leave, and are planning to bring our adult children there for a few days within the next two years.

Service? Listen to this. My wife travels with "her" pillow and due to neck trouble, does not rest well without it (she says). When we left the lodge for San Jose (two hours away at least) we left the pillow behind by accident. The owner of the lodge called on our cell and told us he would bring it to our next hotel. I told him just to ship it, but he was not to be denied. That same day, he was at our hotel with the pillow with a big smile giving us a blessing for the rest of the trip. Unbelieveable!

Room Tip: It is a small lodge and all the rooms are in a row - seemed all the same to me.

We stayed at the Bosque de Paz for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We loved the rustic charm that the grounds had to offer. Depending on when you go the nights can be cold so make sure you have the proper clothing. While there, we could see unique birds right outside our window! The staff was extremely friendly, and we loved the home-cooked meals. We got a chance to try some of foods we may not have otherwise tried on our own. Our stay was very relaxing and we got the opportunity to truly enjoy being able to observe nature. If you enjoy nature walks, there are various trails to take. None of them are very strenuous and are easy to do. The waterfall is amazing! If you want to get away from it all, enjoy nature, and truly relax, this is the place to go!

This eco-lodge is nestled in a picturesque valley in the cloud forest with a mountain stream, orchid and moss-covered trees, and lots of hummingbirds. The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful, and the meals were delicious. My room was very comfortable and decorated nicely. I was with a group of photographers, and we had plenty to photograph. We stayed for two nights, but wished we could have stayed longer.
