I've stayed in Helen and Phil's other properties in Bourg D'Oisans several times so had no hesitation in booking their B&B for a quick 2 day raid of the mountains. There is a spacious living area with UK tv (essential for the World Cup...), clean simple bedrooms with great showers and Helen is there to prepare a pre-ride breakfast.
The property is a stroll from the town centre with several evening eating choices. You can roll your bike from the secure bike store (with all the tools you'd expect), straight onto the main rides of the region.
We had a brilliant stay with Helen and Phil at the MT21Bends B&B in Bourg d'Oisans.
We arrived on a Thursday evening (lift from Lyon with the excellent chairlift.eu - Will was our driver). There were 8 of us in our party and we filled the B&B - all experienced road cyclists but most were experiencing the Alps for the first time and our goals on the short journey were to climb Alpe D'Huez and to attempt Le Col de la Croix de Fer/Col du Glandon. On the Thursday evening we arrived around 6pm, quickly built bikes and got out and up the first half of the Alpe as a bit of a sighter - 30km around the valley and the low slopes.
We ate at La Romanche in the town - plenty good food and great for a large group that just wanted fuel for the next day and decent service. We ended up eating there every night we were in Bourg. It was a cheap, easy and plenty tasty option for us.
Breakfasts at the B&B were perfect. Selection of mueslis, granola, toast, yoghurts, fresh fruit, juices and fresh coffee and Helen kindly cooked scrambled eggs and/or porridge to our slightly erratic orders. There's also a little chit operated shop in the breakfast bar for things like lights, gas canisters, electrolyte tabs and most importantly (and recommended) SLABS of fruitcake.
We climbed Alpe D'Huez with Phil as a guide and he did a great job of warming us up with a tour of the valley and then up the Alpe (remember if you want the official TdF Strava segment you need to start further back than you think!). Phil took pictures too which were shared with us for free later in the day. We met at Prompt.cc in town for a glass of wine in the evening too, which was a lovely touch. In the afternoon a group of us climbed up to the Pas de la Confession (A quiet climb with some stunning cliff top roads and a lovely view of the hairpins of Huez) and then back down the Alpe's hairpins from Huez Village. 80km ^ 2,800m.
On our second full day we set out early after breakfast for the Col de la Croix de Fer. We were really lucky with the May weather, but it was still absolutely freezing at the top of the Cols (Glandon was officially shut although we climbed up to it anyway after the Iron cross). The climb and the descent were everything we'd hoped for and when we got back to the B&B we were very grateful for Helen's friend Katie and her healing hands with a little sports massage to ease the pain - we'd forgotten to book in advance, but we're lucky she was home and free. €10 for each 10 minutes was nothing at that point! 90km ^ 2,100m.
On the last morning we opted not to ride, but rather finish packing to have a walk around the village and enjoy the last bit of sunshine before our transfer back to Lyon. The strict 10am check out meant we didn't want to risk a really rushed packing, but if you got up very early you could probably get a couple of hours in.
The beds at the B&B were very comfortable, the showers were really powerful and scorching hot if required, the wi-if worked, the food was very good, the welcome excellent, the provision for cyclists was second to none (brilliant garage secure space with a stand, tools and racks for bikes and bike boxes). Really thoroughly recommended - if you can find space, I'm not surprised to hear they're nearly fully booked for the summer.
Thanks Helen and Phil.
