i booked this hotel on the internet as it was near the old german fortifactions that i was visiting, there seemed to be only two hotels to choose from one was more expensive so i decided to book this one, i filled out the internet form, and they let me know by email and then i had to ring the hotel to confirm we saw that one review said they didnt speak english so we booked the hotel using our best French! i then read the reviews (sort of backwards way) and oh dear what have i done, but i thought well we will expect the worst and to my supprise it was really nice, old in need of updating, good food, good shower, no thrills hotel, the staff were really nice and helpful, then i realised what the reviews were about, if your a typical English type person who goes to France and expect the french to speak english who i add the french dont like that type, go elsewhere, this is a good french owned hotel who like you to understand your not in England anymore, and i think being close to Calais alot of English would visit that area, i live in Guernsey channel islands and know how some English behave just remember your in France

What can I add to the comments of other reviewers? On our second morniing during breakfast I was asking for a second serving of bread, which I got, only to discover that one of the baguette peices had been on a table before: it was already cut in half and there were traces of marmelade on it.
NEVER again!

This tiny independent hotel, metres from the beach on the quiet coast between Calais and Boulogne is ideal for a short break with minimum travel time from the UK. An outstanding restaurant with great seafood, and about a dozen basic rooms, which, like the meals are very good value; 45-55 Euros for double rooms, most with sea views. Child friendly and welcoming too. Popular even off season, so best to book ahead. Highly recommended!

  • Liked — The food; well above average at well below average prices
  • Disliked — The hotel reception closes between 2.30 and 6pm, but they do warn you of this

I have read some critical reviews of this hotel, but I decided to book it for three nights for a family group of ten, partly because I had seen it on earlier visits to Wissant (a minute's walk from a lovely beach), and partly because I was glad to find somewhere that could fit us all in during the high season at fairly short notice.

It is difficult to imagine a place that would be more suitable for a family group such as ours: four grandparents, two young parents, two older teenagers and two toddlers. I particularly asked that the two rooms for parents and toddlers should be next to each other, and the manager reserved for us a group of three rooms, all with private bathrooms, behind a "front door" at the top of the first flight of stairs, with a small and useful entryway containing a table. The other three rooms were not far away on the same floor.

Yes, the rooms are small and simply furnished, with whitewashed walls and pleasant wooden furniture. The cheapest single rooms have neatly designed handbasins and very little floor space, but are clean, adequate and comfortable, with clean showers and lavatories next door. Nothing could be described as "luxurious" and no-one would expect luxury at the prices charged. The cheapest single room was 35.70€, and the most expensive twin room was 68.30€. It is an old building in the best sense of the word: attractive and traditional in appearance from the outside, and simply decorated inside with wooden floors and white walls and a refreshing absence of plastic or strident colours. The stairs are indeed narrow and steep, with a useful hall at the bottom (inside a locked door) for pushchairs and beach gear. When I paid our bill, the manager pointed out that one benefit of having no stars was that the taxe de séjour was lower, and he also took off a 5% discount for staying three nights.

Yes, one is asked to make an immediate decision about breakfast; either everyone should take it throughout the stay, or no-one. This seemed administratively sensible, and we decided to take it: the youngest was not charged, the toddler was half price, the rest of us paid 7.80€, and we had our own table. When you compare this to the price of a couple of coffees in a cheap Boulogne cafe (5.20€) it seemed very reasonable. There was plenty of fresh bread (more was brought when we needed it), a warm croissant each, unlimited and acceptable coffee, chocolate, orange juice, milk, a kettle and tea bags, cereals, cheese and sausage (neither very nice), yoghurt, butter, jams and honey. The staff were efficient and friendly, and replaced supplies promptly. The hotel was completely full on Saturday and Sunday but everything ran smoothly and there was plenty of breakfast for everybody.

We arrived late on Saturday night, at 10pm, because of a delayed ferry and a blocked road between Boulogne and Wissant. The manager coped with our tired and complicated group with efficiency and courtesy, speaking English. He showed us our rooms, explained the security system, warned us that it would be difficult for us to find supper anywhere at that hour, and offered to telephone the one place likely to be open. He managed to book us a table for 11pm, drew us a map, and we walked round past closed bars and restaurants and had supper there. Throughout our short stay he was friendly and welcoming, and we picked up no hint in that hotel of the anglophobia suggested by other reviewers.

We had a birthday lunch there on Monday for about 20€ per adult plus drinks, and though no-one would call it a luxurious meal, it was honest food served in a formal yet friendly way in pleasant surroundings and we all enjoyed the occasion.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone sensible enough to understand that it is a straightforward, unpretentious, clean and comfortable base for a beach holiday and for exploring the coast.

If I hadn't paid a deposit we wouldn't have even stayed one night.
This was to be the highlight of our trip - the 'exquisite' old hotel on the beach with a renowned seafood restaurant. We arrived at Wissant and parked opposite the hotel. We had trouble finding the reception. When we did find it, the door was locked! When we were admitted we were led into a dim, damp room with tatty ageing furniture. We were shown to our room which was clean but very bare and basic though the price was more than better hotels we'd already stayed at, but access was up a narrow bendy staircase that probably had been the old servants' access - the walls were all scuffed where luggage had been carried up. We asked if there were other stairs and were told 'No' (we later found two other staircases - one which seemed to go down to a locked lobby and another that descended into a dark area in the vicinity of the reception!) We asked about the hotel parking and were told to leave our car out in the street because the access to the courtyard was tight and the locked the gate mid evening.
No bedside tables, the bedside lights were wall mounted so high we had to get out of bed to switch them on and off. The main lighting was two spots in the ceiling one of which didn't work and the other flickered on and off.The ad promised a comfortable lounge with an open fire - we never found it! We did find a posh dining area which we thought was the breakfast room but that turned out to be part of the restaurant which was curtained off.
Breakfast was extra and either we had it every day or not at all.
AND they wanted paying in full up front because reception is only open between 2 and 8 so would be closed when we checked out.
Such a pity - with a little thought it could be a really fabulous place to stay.

  • Liked — Room bare but beds clean and comfortable
  • Disliked — The welcome - when we eventually got into reception

We stayed at this hotel (booked through an agent) in August 2005 and found the owner very unfriendly, unhelpful and probably not very fond of English tourists. The hotel was just about OK, though spartan and the bed uncomfortable. The food was mediocre – go elsewhere if you can find anything. There is however, not that much choice in Wissant – which is, though, a most magnificent beach and area for walking. This year we booked directly by a combination of email and telephone. The booking was accepted and credit card details given and confirmed but, when we arrived, there were no rooms available. The owner was unapologetic and totally unhelpful - despite his having copies of all the emails. He frequently walked away to talk to other clients in the middle of our debate. We detected a distinct anti-English feeling and suspected that the rooms had been knowingly given to others despite our reservation (the town was full). Go to Wissant, but avoid this hotel.
