“Fawlty Towers in France”
Reviewed November 2, 2007

If I hadn't paid a deposit we wouldn't have even stayed one night.
This was to be the highlight of our trip - the 'exquisite' old hotel on the beach with a renowned seafood restaurant. We arrived at Wissant and parked opposite the hotel. We had trouble finding the reception. When we did find it, the door was locked! When we were admitted we were led into a dim, damp room with tatty ageing furniture. We were shown to our room which was clean but very bare and basic though the price was more than better hotels we'd already stayed at, but access was up a narrow bendy staircase that probably had been the old servants' access - the walls were all scuffed where luggage had been carried up. We asked if there were other stairs and were told 'No' (we later found two other staircases - one which seemed to go down to a locked lobby and another that descended into a dark area in the vicinity of the reception!) We asked about the hotel parking and were told to leave our car out in the street because the access to the courtyard was tight and the locked the gate mid evening.
No bedside tables, the bedside lights were wall mounted so high we had to get out of bed to switch them on and off. The main lighting was two spots in the ceiling one of which didn't work and the other flickered on and off.The ad promised a comfortable lounge with an open fire - we never found it! We did find a posh dining area which we thought was the breakfast room but that turned out to be part of the restaurant which was curtained off.
Breakfast was extra and either we had it every day or not at all.
AND they wanted paying in full up front because reception is only open between 2 and 8 so would be closed when we checked out.
Such a pity - with a little thought it could be a really fabulous place to stay.

We stayed at this hotel (booked through an agent) in August 2005 and found the owner very unfriendly, unhelpful and probably not very fond of English tourists. The hotel was just about OK, though spartan and the bed uncomfortable. The food was mediocre – go elsewhere if you can find anything. There is however, not that much choice in Wissant – which is, though, a most magnificent beach and area for walking. This year we booked directly by a combination of email and telephone. The booking was accepted and credit card details given and confirmed but, when we arrived, there were no rooms available. The owner was unapologetic and totally unhelpful - despite his having copies of all the emails. He frequently walked away to talk to other clients in the middle of our debate. We detected a distinct anti-English feeling and suspected that the rooms had been knowingly given to others despite our reservation (the town was full). Go to Wissant, but avoid this hotel.

stopped here for a night getaway on eurotunnel because our usual place was fully booked.
Arrived 15 minutes before the reception was open and the owner who was working in the restaurant told us to come back later.
HE COULD have offered us a drink in the bar and a chat, but he didnt ! So we strolled to the beach and had a great pot of mussells and chips and vin rose in the beach bar and had a much better time!
We kept the receptionist waiting for a while it turns out so we were satisfied in that respect !
Room was on split level and my daughter loved her attic space.
All the floorboards and the bed creek so we didnt get much sleep.
Room was a bit shabby and looked lke it was last decorated in 1980. Breakfast was laid out and the tables were numbered with our rooms so you couldnt chose where you sat :(
Not bad though...and not very busy...and the restaurant is one of the most expensive in town...there are plenty of others

Hotel de la Plage
1 place Edouard Houssin
(before it was: 1, rue Arlette Davids)
F 62179 Wissant

Nord-Pas-de-Calais
France

I went to Wissant with three friends. We had booked 2 rooms in the Hotel de la Plage in advance. It is a low budget hotel (49 euro for a double and 60 euro for a twin with bathroom) so we didn´t expect too much. Our first impression was a shock though, the hotel is very old and looked like that. The reception room smelt terribly. The two young guys were friendly but asked us to pay the rates for the whole week in advance. After we saw the rooms we upgraded one double room to a twin room (the bed in the double room was very small as they are usually in France).

The rooms were very very basic with nothing on the walls except the fire alarm instructions and no furniture except the beds and a small wooden table and one chair. There was a very small wardrobe in the wall. The rooms were clean and luckily didn´t smell like the reception room. Some of the rooms are with old wooden floors, which is nice, others have carpets. Unfortunately one of the rooms was a bit noisy at night because of the hotel ventilation system. The owner (or manager?) of the hotel promised to switch it off for a few hours at night but didn´t do it. He generally was very unfriendly and not helpful at all. There was a parking area which we thought was the hotel parking - it apparently wasn´t - and he got really angry when we tried to park our car there. We felt more like in a youth hostel than in a hotel.

After seeing the breakfast "buffet" we decided that it wasn´t worth 7,50 euro and that we´d rather have breakfast in a café. The problem was that there was none in the village that served breakfast. Most tourists in Wissant apparently stay in self-serviced appartments, something we might consider as well the next time we go there. We ended up having picnic at the indisputable lovely beach for breakfast.

We cannot recommend the dinner in the hotel restaurant. It was eatable but uninspired and lukewarm. In fact, we had trouble finding a good restaurant good restaurant in Wissant. It seems that for a nice dinner Wissant is the wrong place. I recommend driving to Wimereux or even Boulogne-sur-Mer for eating out. There also is a good fish restaurant in Escalles, a village next to Wimereux. Drive from Wissant to Escalles, then in Escalles turn left (there´s only one major crossway) and the restaurant is one of the last buildings before the street ends (close to the Cap Blanc Nez).

Bottom line: Wissant has a nice beach to offer and but that´s about it. The other hotels, judging from the outside, weren´t much better, only the "Normandy" looked a bit better but also has only got two stars at maximum. If you are on a low budget and have no requirements other than a clean room, then you might want to try the Hotel de la Plage. They have rooms without shower (you share the shower with only one other room though) that are even cheaper.

Wimereux and Boulogne-sur-Mer have better hotels and restaurants but no nice beaches. If I was to go to Wissant again I would try to book an apartment (in August you need to book early though). More likely I would stay in Wimereux or Boulogne-sur-Mer and rather drive to the beaches.
