I need to start this review by saying that when we visited, 50 out of 80 rooms are out of action following a flood a while back. It is expected to reopen fully in stages over the coming months.
The area is very peaceful, indeed there are are the ruins of the old Cloister opposite the makeshift reception. . Arriving on the train in Grimma was not promising, as the old GDR station there has been left. It is a short taxi ride (10 euro) to the hotel. Staff were very welcoming, and were keen to help. The room we had in the annex was spacious and well equipped. It had a sort of arch separating the living space from the bedroom, and there was a lovely balcony with a view across the meadow. Due to the flood, the restaurant/ breakfast room was out of action, so a local restaurant seems to have been taken over. I do not know if this is a permanent arrangement, but it seems to work well. We slept well, and the German buffet breakfast was plentiful. We were there to visit Colditz Castle, which is about 12km away. We took a taxi there, but caught a bus back, for one fifth of the price. It stops at the end of the road where the hotel is. The only thing is that the bus does not come very often. The rest of the hoel looks to be well spaced, so I think it would not lose its peaceful feel, even though there seem to be pleanty of things to do. It takes a bit of getting to on the train, but it is definitely worth visiting this part of the world, and this hotel would be a very good place to start.
