“Very unusual dining experience but good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

We were on a weekend away and decided to go for a Saturday evening meal. We werent aware of how long the meal took or how much food there was to eat!!
We sat down and waited for quite a while for our drinks to arrive, and then it seemed ages until we were asked which starter we wanted- which then arrived about 2seconds later. It then transpired that everyone in the room is given their starters at the same time, then so on throughout the courses. A most bizarre way of serving - then on the main courses and puddings the staff show a sampe of each dish to all the tables-however this food was cold and looked very unappealing. The meal itself was excellent and well cooked.
After the starter was soup, then a main which was a bit heavy on the potatoes- it was sea bass with daupinoise and then new potatoes in a bowl on the table- yet no veg?
Followed was an enormous portion of dessert- very good pavlova- then the weirdest thing- another dessert! I was soooo full I couldnt possibly manage any more food but obviously everyone else knew about this and had another portion!
Due to this strange way of serving we were in the restaurant for about four hours and it did seem to drag on and on- had we known this we probably wouldnt have gone as we had previously made plans for later in the evening which we didnt do!
The staff were very pleasant but very quick to keep taking away the glasses and hovered around the table which was a bit annoying. My friend had literally just put her fork down and was still eating when her plate was taken!
It was very hot and nearing the end of meal they put the fan on which was a relief.
Dont know if we would go back- probably not- nothing to do with the food itself which was lovely but just far too much food and the whole process just took too long! Good value about £32 per person for a lot of food!!

“'Proudly presenting the burnt bread and butter pudding'??!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2013

After our last lunch at Colleys we were looking forward to returning. We brought along our family too this time. Unfortunately this time it was very poor. The pork (thai style) starter was very bland and full of tasteless green beans and very little pork. My roast beef was chewy and everyone's favourite the Yorkshire puddings were burnt.

But thing that made us chuckle on the day (in fact I nearly fell off my seat it was so ridiculously funny) was the presentation of the bread and butter pudding which was the first pudd to be presented around the restaurant. The waiter proudly presented it and explained what it had in it etc. but it was black, it was burnt...!!! Very bizarre to bring it out at all let alone first. The other pudds looked fine and were ok. Surely they could have brought another pudd out first whilst they scrapped the top off or similar to rescue it.

We weren't seated very comfortably, we were closely packed in and too close too each other (and we are not big!) We were looking forward to a good family chat but it was very noisy in there too.

For the £250 we spent, we would have preferred to cook a feast at home for a quarter of the price.

Very disappointing and we are voting with our feet and not returning.

“Perfect evening out with friends”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

5 tasty courses, beautifully cooked and presented. Just the right amount of food. A bit pricy but you get what you pay for.
Staff bring the food out and give a small description of what each course is so its easy to decide.
Be prepared to spend the whole evening there. Lovely surroundings and great staff.

“Totally lost its charm”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

Sorry Colley's, you've got rid of your old fashioned uniform, your old fashioned hospitality, the beautiful wallpaper, hors d'oeuvres, the sorbet and you've totally lost your entire appeal. What is special about your restaurant anymore? nada, sorry.
The food is yummy but nothing I would shout about.
This review is from Christmas 2012- apologies about the late review.
The decorations were lack luster and cheap- shiny plastic tacky things floating down from the ceiling- terrible. No idea what they were going for here.
We have been using Colley's for years as a special occasion place and it has lost it's appeal.
We paid an extortionate amount each to eat at Colley's for dinner and for what we received in return-yikes.
Also, please please please sort out your music and your bright lights...It killed the atmosphere.
I wish I didn't have to be so brutal but after paying out so much money it was so disappointing.
