“A relaxing anniversary weekend in the Cotswolds”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We stayed at Barnsley House for two nights over our anniversary and it was heavenly…

A beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. The Gardens are stunning, so much wildlife – bees, butterflies and flowers everywhere. We loved the Kitchen Garden too and visited it a couple of times during our stay.

The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. We ate in both the Potager Restaurant and the Village Pub and would recommend both. Our only negative point is that the Village Pub had the same veggie dish on the menu as the Potager Restaurant had the day before - this was a bit of a shame for my husband who is vegetarian...

We stayed in room 12 – one of the "less expensive" rooms – it was really really comfortable and very spacious – we slept so well.

Breakfast was very good and the quality of food was very high. The spa was really relaxing – perhaps a bit on the small side, but really well put together nonetheless.

All in all, this hotel was the perfect retreat for a couple that wanted a celebratory weekend in the middle of nowhere. Thanks to all the staff for making it so special – we will definitely recommend to others.

Weather just about held out for afternoon tea in the garden and what a pleasure it turned out to be. The up market end of the Calcot Manor Hotel chain, Rosemary Verey's old home seems to be in safe if not spectacular hands. The actual afternoon tea of classic sandwiches, cakes and scones, whilst not hitting the heights in actual freshness nor flavour, is certainly great value. It was worth every penny to enjoy the whole ambience, with attentive but unobtrusive staff, of the hotel and its gardens. Five stars for the setting and staff but only four for the actual tea. However don't be put off, it is a wonderful place to visit and experience an English country house hotel.

The spa and service was impeccable in every way. One or two tiny niggles (eg more choice of non-alcoholic drinks) but the management took careful note and were very keen to put things right. Already booked for next year. Very very reasonable rates for mid-week stays, Room 6 a total bargain, all of top floor of main building, beautiful.

Room Tip: Room 6, it's brilliant!

This is the 2nd time that I have stayed at Barnsley house and although the rooms are expensive (stayed in room 11 the secret garden suite) it is a very relaxing environment. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast is excellent as is the service.
The best bit about Barnsley house is the spa. I have used spa's all over the world and the spa here is not the best in the world but by far the best in the UK. It is a quiet discreet and small spa with a indoor and outdoor relaxation area and a outdoor hydro pool. The treatments are very good but unlike many spa's that after you have had your treatment either return you to the main relaxation area or take your money and then say good bye, here you are taken to a separate relaxation room where the lighting is low and the walls are woven willow. You are given a small frozen sorbet and you can relax for as long as you want. This is not a turn up for a treatment and go spa, this is a spa experience. 100 times better than the spa at the sister hotel Calcot manor!
I can't wait for my wife to treat me again!

Special hotel in Rosemary Verey's garden tempted us to book for a special birthday. Had to track down staff to book in - reception in basement. Mix up with booked rooms. Thought local farmer had been spreading nourishment on the fields but alas the coach house rooms are next to a beef unit. Unable to open windows. If you have no sense of smell the rooms are beautifully furnished. Dined in hotel's pub across the road, looked promising, good welcome. Let down by cold food and obnoxious waitress who pretended not to speak English but shouting match with my husband and the manager proved otherwise ! Very unimpressed to say the least. We de-camped.......the birthday treat was spoiled.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house

After going to Bibury Court Hotel and being turned away it was so gratifying to go to Barnsley house for lunch. Not a sour face in the joint. All welcoming and friendly. Heaven. the lunch was delicious and good value, the hotel was not pretentious but well decorated in a muted "country house" modern meets farmhouse sort of way. Very comfy. The garden was a delight, not too big, beautifully crafted by Rosemary Verey and maintained in her style by the very capable gardener. It made our day and thank you.

First off this is not a review on the overnight accommodation. Afternoon tea experience only. I picked this hotel after googling Cirencester/Afternoon tea. Have never visited before so open minded. The basic tea at £18.00 pp was about right but could have been a couple of tweaks. Sandwiches fresh and very nice. Cakes were okay but have definitely had better. The scones were delicious and also fresh/warm. The setting was on the patio and surrounded by lovely well kept country style garden. Furniture comfortable rattan style. Only major criticism was when we asked for a second pot of tea, we got the first pot back with a load more leaves dumped on top of the old ones with hot water, so it was more like afternoon tar - horrible.
