Visited for a family birthday lunch. It was a very busy day in Barnsley as the village show was in full swing. There were Morris Dancers on the lawn of the hotel and a plant sale in front. The gardens were open to the public but this in no way detracted from the experience.
We wandered around the gardens including the vegetable garden and it is clear the hotel are serious about growing a lot of their own food. They employ a full-time gardener who was on hand to answer questions whilst he pottered on the vegetable patches. They also have a large area for their chickens who looked very contented (even smug!) in their run which is larger than most people's back gardens!
A couple of our party were a bit late (plus ca change) but it wasn't a problem as we were served champagne on the patio next to the hotel. We browsed the menus while we waited and it was clear they focussed on in-season vegetables - asparagus featured heavily! There was nevertheless something for everyone.
We were shown to our table inside and the service was attentive and friendly. The white wine we had chosen was not chilled to the management's satisfaction so rather than serve this they offered a free upgrade to a different bottle - this was a nice touch and appreciated. The food was delicious, well presented and in ample portions though a few more vegetables would have been nice. Jugged water kept coming without any prompting which was a good feature.
One thing that did not seem quite right was the serving of coffee with the puddings but this was a very minor grumble.
We will be back.
