We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Ghent to meet up with family and stayed at the Eremyton hof hotel. We would definitely return. Just a 20 minute trip on the number 1 tram it was a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. The local bus journey to Bruges {stops just 5 minutes away in the square} was also an interesting experience. The owners made us feel very welcome, twice offering to drive us the short distance to the tram station. Breakfast was always leisurely, looking out over the beautiful gardens; guests could also book evening meals.Rooms were well furnished and the antiques fascinating. All in all a charming hotel.
P.S The marble spiral staircase could be a problem but my mother is 85 years of age and managed it with no problems !!!

At first I was impressed by the look of the hotel from the outside. It is not at all like a typical hotel, it has a picturesque garden, where one may take a walk. The vegetation was natural, with tall old trees, lawns and beautiful autumn leaves...

We did not have to pay for parking and it was very conviniently right in front of the entrance. The owner was very nice and welcomed us himself and gave us an insight into the history of the house and the plans for the future.
The house was very tidy. Everything inside looked antique, furniture, keys, paintings. The room had a big bed, a wardrobe, elegant decoration, an own bathroom, shower and a very romantic view form the window. We enjoyed a fantastic 5 course dinner cooked by the owner's wife in a cosy kitchen, outside of the house (it was paid separately, but it was inexpensive and very much worth it). In the morning we had home made croisants (included in the room price:)
The hotel is in the countryside, but very close to Gent, one can get to the city center in 20 minutes by tram.
The owners, the atmosphere of the house and the garden made that stay unforgetable.
I would highly recommend it to people who are not looking for a typical chain hotel, but want to feel at home and appreciate special atmosphere, fresh air, good food and tranquility.

WARNING! Ghent Eremytenhof (Evergem)
Do not be enticed by the pretty photographs at the website. I made that mistake and wasted one full day within our short holiday.
Unwelcoming hosts, whose main concerns were the objets d'art at the corridors. We were warned that we will have to spend "lots of money" should there be any damage to any of their items which are scattered freely all along the corridors.
The rooms - small and most of all the toilet/bathroom has no door and is open plan with the bedroom.
There is construction work going on outside.
With the "picturesque" lake, there are plenty of mosquitos. We spent the whole night, hot and without sleep, smacking mosquitoes. There was no mosquito protection provided or even a fan.
We booked into a reputed hotel the very next day for a much better weekend deal and comfortable nights.

With a meeting close by in the harbour I discovered this place. The hotel website does not capture the feeling of space you get on the spot. I corresponded by email and received prompt and adequate replies. So I was welcomed by a charming Dutch host and pampered by his French wife with delicious food, try and book an evening meal ! The house was lovingly restored with a personal touch, not like a million dollar remake, some minor projects still to come. I was able to eat outside under a gazebo overlooking the pond and park, oh yes real animals leave real things behind in their habitat...My single room was not so big but nicely decorated with country style linnen, soft sheets on a quality matress. What a great place to unwind !
