Along with the Tollgate Café overlooking the harbour, this charming caff with its wonderful views is a throwback to the sixties seaside holidays, with friendly service and a decent range of solid fare and ice creams.

It now opens in the evenings (booking advisable) but plans have apparently been afoot for some time to redevelop the site so visit now before it's too late!

We had been recommended to this cafe by friends and it is well worth a visit. The sandwich lunches were well prepared and served at a reasonable price. Plenty of outside seating with parasols - very necessary in the hot July 2013 weather. Wonderful views over the sea and the lifeboat pier.

Had a meal here this evening with a friend. When we phoned to book we were asked if we'd like to pre order any seafood. We had the crevettes to start followed by fresh crab salad and a half lobster salad. Served promptly by a very friendly young man. The prawns were delicious, although garlic butter not very garlicky. Still tasty though. The crab and the lobster were very good. A bit too much brown crab meat for my liking also a bit too much like crab paste but overall yummy. My friend said her lobster was very good. New potatoes on the menu would have been a plus for us but we had chips. A chocolate brownie to finish. Washed down with a chilled bottle of pinot grigio, very nice indeed. We would return. Good value for fresh seafood. Fantastic sea view. Can recommend.

We spotted an advert for the Lifeboat View Cafe in the magazine on the ferry over to the Isle of Wight and decided to give it a try. I called and booked a table for lunch and was a bit worried about the questions of whether we wanted to pre-order crab or lobster as it seemed a little strange. Then I read some of the reviews on tripadvisor and got a little worried about what we were in for. I needn't have worried.

We were 6 for lunch, 3 adults and 3 children. We ordered the seafood platter of lobster, 2 dressed crabs, prawns etc as well as a few other dishes. Despite only having reserved 1 crab, the second was not an issue. You order at the counter and the food came pretty quickly. We were outside and the view is great, the kids played around near the water while we waited. The NZ Sauvignon was cold and delicious while we waited for lunch.

The crab especially was amazing - well worth a visit for this alone. It is dressed so no messing around trying to deal with crab legs etc. The large prawns were also amazing. So tasty. The lobster almost paled in significance amongst the crab and prawns.

The staff were quite stretched on a beautiful summer day but super helpful and nice.

We decided we'd like another crab but they were sold out. Disaster! But the waitress with the curly hair told us where we could drive in Bembridge to buy them direct from the fisherman which we did after we left.

This is no gourmet restaurant or glamorous location. What it does have is amazing fresh seafood in a quaint little building with a nice view. The crab especially more than justifies a visit. If in doubt, order an extra one when you book your table - you will probably want it after eating what you pre-ordered!

It is also worth pre-ordering in summer etc as it would have been a major disappointment if we had been a walk-in table and not been able to get the best of their seafood. So I would recommend booking in advance and pre-ordering crab and/or lobster to avoid disappointment!
