This was our 4th visit to bembridge iow and we had been looking forward to it. We booked it for my husbands birthday and had upgraded to a Royale expecting the same level of luxury as the last time we stayed. how wrong we were.We had difficulty entering as the key given is for the inner door not the outer and the doors are so close together it is hard to keep them both open long enough to get your case through. A grubby beigish carpet greeted us. the lamp had two of its arms broken off, wallpaper peeling from walls great lumps of filler not sanded and painted over added to the general feeling of decay.
The welcome pack has dwindled to two mini bottles of wine, (no glasses in our room, to swig or not to swig? that is the question)
The blind was broken and would slowly unravel as we watched (perhaps the special feature?) not that we had it open much as our window was outside the path everyone else used to walk along still it made a change from the view of a large hedge 6 feet from the window.
The bathroom was as bad as there were cracked tiles, on that looked as if it was about to fall off the wall and screws sticking out of the shower screen. The bath panel was loose and not fitted properly. still the toiletries were white company which was nice.
The best part we did not find out until bedtime as our room was next to the boiler (room 703)
so we had the sound of it starting up and gurgling and whooshing all night. It made a change from hearing every footstep and toilet flush from the room above.
All in all the standard room we had last time was better quality and more luxurious.
On complaining to the duty manager we were told that the general manager was on leave and would look into things and contact us that was nearly 2 months ago. I was holding off on my review until then but not having heard from them have gone ahead and written it.
On a brighter note the food was fantastic and seconds readily available (as the fishcake starter was so nice we had it twice!)
The waiting staff were a joy friendly always smiling even though rushed off their feet.
The bar staff also fab and even remembered we had told them it was my husbands birthday 2 days before and wished him happy birthday on the day. a credit to the company.
Shame about the room. We paid for luxury and received a room worse than ours at home
beware the brochure as well as the royale rooms shown are actually the royale suites at an even larger supplement. they do not tell you this on the page.
