“A lovely afternoon out”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

My grand-children thoroughly enjoyed their first experience of travelling in a 1st class carriage on a steam railway, from Bolton Abbey station to Embsay station and back. They finished off their trip by standing on the footplate of the engine and chatted with the driver. The great, sunny weather made the trip even better, and we enjoyed a drink and home-made cake in the garden next to Bolton Abbey station. A great experience.

“Lovely!”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

I really wish we had booked in advance to save some money. There are currently vouchers available on the Yorkshire website or if you book online in advance you also get a small discount. At £12 each for a first class day ticket it wasn't cheap. The main advantage of booking first class is the lack of children and the peace and quiet! The views were nice but not outstanding. It was rather nostalgic being on a steam train and the old platforms were lovely, especially Bolton Abbey. I can highly recommend the victoria sponge cake at Bolton Abbey cafe! The shop at Bolton Abbey has a lot of Thomas the Tank engine memorabilia. The volunteers work very hard and create a lovely atmosphere.

Lovely friendly day out. Kids will love riding on the old trains with a good excuse for the adults. Nice cafe at Bolton Abbey end for refreshments.
