“Aiming high and almost there!”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Fabulous cosy hotel for a winter visit. Charming staff. Cosy log fires and so welcoming. Location amazing- a wander through the fields to Bolton Abbey is a must- borrow wellies from the entrance porch. Stayed in room 10 which is the wheelchair accessible room and also suitable for an additional bed. It is close to reception door at start of corridor so I found it a bit noisy but was so tired it didn't disturb me! Fab touches with home made biccies and fresh milk, bath robes, postcard to send home etc. Shame the shower room floor wasn't heated as it was horribly cold to walk on :(
Spa very pleasant although it is across the road.
Ate in the Brasserie which was delicious with excellent food and wine.Breakfast delicious and very enjoyable. Restaurant service @both charming & fabulous. well done!
Only grumble is the discretionary service charge for BOTH the hotel and the restaurant, which I had picked up from Trip Advisor. I quizzed reception @ check out and gather only a proportion goes to the staff with the rest to the hotel. Excuse me but have already PAID for the hotel!! I prefer to tip individual staff with cash as I see fit. Was offered the option to remove it but as it was nominal for a one night stay I didn't bother. I have a personal hatred of this practice- it's just not right!
Love the Chatsworth ethos - very high standard, fabulous paintings and decor. Obviously a good management team. Want to try the Devonshire Fell another time..................

food, staff, ambiance, spa etc etc very very good
nothing is perfect in life, but, this is as near as you will get
keep it up. the wifi didn't stretch to our room or even the dining room so i missed out on watching sky football in the room but did get it in the reception. the excellent room was shielded from the bathroom and loo by a semi transparent net leaving not much to the imagination when the lights were on
even so, you will have trouble finding as a comprehensive friendly hotel as the DA.
thanks

Thank you for your review and we are delighted you enjoy your stays with us. We are aware of the Internet issues that you faced, unfortunately due to our location albeit very picturesque it is quite remote and at present we do not have a fixed high speed broadband connection. This is something that we are looking into and plans are being submitted to overcome this as quickly as possible.

Best wishes

I have lost count of how many times we have visited this hotel over the years. My favourite time of year to call in is the winter, when the fires are lit, and it is a lovely blend of cosiness and luxury. This is especially so at Christmas when the decorations and whole atmosphere make it a really special place. We always feel welcomed and relaxed even when just calling in for coffee (and delicious home made biscuits) as we did recently.

I cannot praise this hotel enough. We stayed here this week on a trip to Leeds for 3 nights. The staff were a pleasure to deal with-the atmosphere efficient, but made you feel immediately at home and the food and service was first class. Oh and the views were pretty good too...(try the taster menu-you will not be dissappointed) Lovely log fires....

We were recommended the Devonshire Arms by family friends, and I decided to treat my wife to 3 nights on the Suite Dreams package.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay. The staff were very friendly and not at all stuffy, unexpectedly so given the class of hotel this is, and having read some of the previous reviews. I have to say we didn't find the atmosphere too formal or stuffy at all.

The room/suite was very large, impeccably decorated and spotlessly clean. Unfortunately, the room had been decorated only a few weeks beforehand, and we could still smell the paint (albeit not too strongly). There were also a couple of faults with the room, such as the lights failing on one night (circuit breaker tripped) and the shower was far too hot to use. We mentioned the shower to the reception, but nothing could be done because it was a Sunday, which is fair enough since there was also a bath.

The food was absolutely exceptional throughout, both at the Brasserie (informal) and the Burlington (formal) restaurants. Overall we probably preferred the Brasserie because it was more lively, but the food at the Burlington really was exceptional. I was also pleased to see that the wine list contained some bottles at sensible prices in both restaurants. The breakfast was one of the best hotel breakfasts we've ever had.

There was a wedding reception in the hotel on the Saturday, which normally annoys us when it's not exclusive use. However, I have to say the staff do an exceptional job of keeping the wedding reception rooms separate from the other hotel areas, and we weren't disturbed at all by any noise.

I would have liked to have given a 5 star review for this hotel, simply because we did enjoy it so much and the staff were great. However, the few niggles with the room were enough to lower the score considering the sheer cost of staying there.

We stayed here to attend a wedding, which was holding its reception at the hotel. A beautiful venue to have a reception, with the stay over being a lovely treat to add to a great weekend. Lovely rooms, with super comfortable beds. Recommend highly

My husband and I stayed at the Devonshire Arms Hotel back in January. We had a truly wonderful experience and have recommended the Hotel to many friends and family since. Even our dog Inca was spoilt during her stay with many a cheeky biscuit from the delightful staff. She was even looked after by the concierge team whilst my husband and I enjoyed a superb meal in the Burlington restaurant. Incredible food, great sommelier, guests are in for a real treat.
We will be back.
