We had a lovely time on boxing day with some friends. The food was very good, but the service was truly appalling. I have eaten here several times and it is always the same, The girls just stand by the till with their backs to the customers talking to each other. They then automatically add a 12.5 % service charge on the bill. We also ordered 4 cups of coffee which came in a pot that did not hold enough. When i pointed this out to the waitress she told me it was my fault for putting too much in the cups. They did not get paid the service charge.

Dear Marc S

On behalf of the Hotel I would like to start by offering my apologies for the level of service that you experienced at The Devonshire Arms Hotel.
We strive to ensure each customer receives the upmost care and attention whilst at the Hotel and it is disappointing to hear that on this occasion we did not meet those values, and this matter has been passed through to the relevant department for immediate attention.

I hope that you will make a return visit to the hotel and Brasserie Restaurant for a more enjoyable experience.

Best wishes for 2013

Returned to this delightful hotel once more for a wonderful pre-Christmas dinner with the family in the Burlington restaurant. The food was as good as ever if not slightly better in that (for my taste) the portions were a little larger, with fewer components and flavours a little less complicated. The sommelier was particularly helpful as was the delightful young lady in charge of the cheese trolley who provided insightful explanations and descriptions.
The only slight criticism I have was that there seemed to be fewer staff on hand in the restaurant with service just that little bit slower due (I believe) to a large wedding party. Over the years I have experienced many hotels trying to be different things to different groups of people at the same time and most produce a less than perfect service to 'normal' guests. For a Michelin starred establishment the least they could do would be to advise the normal diner in advance and make a gesture to reflect that service might not be normal

Dear MrToad

On behalf of The Devonshire Arms Hotel I would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review and for bringing to our attention the points you mentioned regarding the dinner service.
We continuously try to maintain the high standard of service that we are nationally recognised for and unfortunately on this occasion we did have a large wedding which required additional staffing.
I have raised this matter with the relevant departments and also passed on your complements to our Michelin Starred Chef Steve Smith and his team

Best Wishes for 2013

i stayed at the Devonshire Arms over the summer for one night with my mother and it was amazing, as soon as you get there we were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to are room which was warm and spacious and the view was amazing.
we also had a spa treatment each. i had a facial and the lady who did it was very helpful and gave me good skin care advice as well. she really knew what she was talking about.
We ate at the brasserie in the evening which i really enjoyed, there was such a good atmosphere, everyone was friendly and enjoying themselves and the food was superb.
i had one of the best nights sleep i have ever had, the beds are so comfy. we then had breakfast in are room which was such a treat and tasted amazingly.
i would recommend this hotel to everyone. its one of my favourite hotels and i will defiantly be going back soon.

We've just returned from a 2 night stay at the Devonshire, for what has become an annual tradition to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
The service and overall experience, was, as always, impeccable, from the room upgrade at check in, to the delightful touch of a card and chocolates from the hotel in our room, all the way through to two wonderful dining experiences in the Burlington.
The quality is impossible to fault, but what makes this place so special for us is the way that it is achieved in a way that does not compromise the serenity of the place.
The rainy weather gave us an easy excuse to spend our mornings in front of a warm fire, surrendering to the totally relaxing atmosphere and being attended to with quiet efficiency.

We just love this place, it's in a beautiful part of the world with lots of terrific romantic country walks. The hotel is so welcoming, friendly and relaxing. It is prime dog walking country and 'well behaved dogs are welcome' , suffice to say ours gets put in kennels!
From arrival nothing is too much trouble. Its country house luxury at it's best.
There is a choice of two restaurants - the Michelin starred Burlington and the Brasserie. We have dined in both and although the Burlington is an experience worth trying we much prefer the more relaxed environement and style of food in the Brasserie. I can especially recommend the pan fried sea bass with taragon risotto, scallops and braised fennel - with a large chilled glass of sauvignon - heaven.
The spa is small and, to be honest, if it is primarily a spa break you were looking for then I wouldn't recommend The Devonshire - has an indoor pool which is rather small but doesn't get busy, a steam room and sauna, a gym and various treatments (which you need to book in advance of arrival)
We keep going back time after time which says it all about the Devonshire
