Owner description: Twycross Zoo is renowned as a specialist primate zoo and has a wide variety of monkeys and apes including the UK's only group of bonobos. We have breeding groups of many endangered primate species so we often have babies and toddlers playing around in our orang utan and bonobo groups, and in many of our monkey groups. Set in more than 80-acres, we have around 900 animals of more than 160 species to see, including many native species in the Zoo's Nature Reserve. You can walk with our ring-tailed lemurs in their new walk-through enclosure; see our giant tortoises sunbathing in their new grass area and watch our penguins take their daily walk. Our keepers present regular talks and feeds where you can learn a bit more about some of our animals such as the chimpanzees, penguins and meerkats. Twycross Zoo's award winning Education Department offers a variety of discovery opportunities for many different types of groups and parties. The Zoo holds the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, all sessions are curriculum linked and all are designed to best engage all age groups.

I can't express enough how awful this zoo is. There were just no animals! From what we could see, we saw some Monkeys and some Penguins, but everything else was just empty cages with very dirty windows. My first tip to the zoo keepers would be clean the glass! We felt like we were walking around someone's back garden, there were no themes and it was almost like visiting animals in small bungalows. It could quite easily be turned into a retirement resort.

When we went for lunch, we visited 3 different 'restaurants' in the search for some food, and we couldn't even be offered that. Every where we looked we saw signs saying 'It's too good, it's gone' - More like 'You're out of season, we're not going to bother topping up this drinks machine'. There was no food, no animals and was such a waste of money!!! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The only good feature was a cave in which bats fly over your head, we visited this part of the zoo twice because the lack of everything else elsewhere.

This is not even an exaggerated review, this is totally genuine and if you go, my tip is go with a very open mind and don't expect to see any animals.

The zoo was a magical experience as a child, so I was expecting big things, but there were hardly any animals at the zoo and those that were there looked so sad. I will not be returning, the safari park in West Midlands is similarly priced but much better and the animals seem happier!

We have visited this zoo many times over the last few years, however on our most recent visit (31 December 2012) I am sorry to say we won't be returning. They have worked on improving the restaurant and shop/entrance area but the zoo itself is poor. In fact there are so few animals to see it became a bit of a joke in our group as to wheter we would be able to see what was stated on the map! The sea lions and giraffes have both gone so not much variety of animals left. I understand that animals are living creatures and have to be moved or whatever but twycross hadnt even put any signs up or anything giving information to visitors. Overall this zoo is no longer worth visiting. I recommend Chester zoo for a great day out to a zoo!

Visited today with our 2 year old son who had a wonderful time. Good layout. Lovely low windows for little ones to see in. Well maintained grounds despite recent downpours, flooded areas were partioned of to stop anyone getting bogged down. Staff were unfailingly polite. Enclosures were very clean and well maintained, of as good a size as its possible in a zoo with fanatastic enrichment that clearly gets updated and changed regularly. Animals seemed relaxed, healthy and happy with no visible signs of distress. Coffee in the shop near the gorilla enclosure was very reasonable (less than £4 for two) and it was also very clean. Toilets clean too.Would definitely visit again, really good day out.
