Lost Horizon Beach Dive Resort
Ranked #29 of 50 Hotels in Panglao Island
Reviewed January 21, 2009

I agree with JoeKano's of Seattle review completely as we ended up there at the same time. My wife and I are sitting on the pation in there first picture. I don't think that we met.
We ended up there because we booked a week in Cebu - but found out that we could only take 3 days of that city. We located the Lost Horizon Resort by looking in a vacation guide in the Cebu Airport that had an advertisement for this place with directions on getting there. It had the added bonus of a Dive shop located next door. There was a discount included in the ad for both places.
We had great experiances with the Hotel and the Dive shop is very professionally run. I would definately come back here again.
If you are in Cebu Just take the Fast ferry to Tagbilian (`$10) (sp) and a taxi to Alona Beach ($10). The place is clean - Not Fancy!! But Hey - Where can you gete a great place on the beach for this cheap. The Dive shop is fantastic - great staff and very good prices.

We stayed at the Lost Horizons two nights and wish we had time to stay longer. The resort is located right on the beach at the end of the road. There is a strip of hotels that cater to a lot of foreign tourists, mostly Japanese and Norwegian. We didn’t see many Americans there, mostly Europeans and Asians.

We just showed up hoping they had a vacancy. We were lucky in that they had two rooms left. Our room was on the upper level and had a view of the pool. Our friend’s room was on the lower level. The suites had ocean views and if we were to return, we would definitely stay in one of the large suites for a little more money. The restaurant and Tiki bar had fantastic views of the beach and ocean and all the boats anchored in the bay.

Next to the resort was a dive shop. Each morning we would eat breakfast at the restaurant and watch the divers prepare for their SCUBA adventures by putting on their wetsuits and loading up the boats with tanks and equipment. The owner said about 25% of their clients come for the diving.

Some have complained that it took a long time to get your food at the restaurant, but we didn’t think it took long at all. They cook everything from scratch except the pizza. The food was exceptional, the menu varied and prices very reasonable. Loved the Baby Back Ribs.

Our room had a nice, new Sony flat screen HD TV and a little balcony. The bathroom was clean. The bed was nice and I slept well, especially after getting an inexpensive full-body massage each night. It was quiet each night we stayed. The staff brought in an extra bed for our daughter at no charge.

The pool was a little small, but has a nice deep end. My daughter and I swam in it a couple of times. We also enjoyed the Jacuzzi located above the pool.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. The American owner and his Filipina wife took time to visit with us often and made us feel welcome. They only had one computer in the little lobby for internet access but it was free.

We felt safe and secure staying at the Lost Horizon Resort which was important to us. There was a security guard at the gate. We allowed our daughter and her friend to roam around the resort and beach on their own without worrying about their safety.

We would definitely stay at the Lost Horizon Resort again. We loved the place. There were nicer, more expensive hotels on the strip that we also checked out, but for the money, Lost Horizon was the best value. The room rates were very reasonable, food excellent with fantastic views.

This place is located at the end of the road that goes down into the Alona Beach. There were only two parking spots. But nobody goes there with a car except me. The hotel is nice and clean. Everything worked perfectly. The aircon was super cool that it fogs out my view of the beautiful beach front. The services were great, staff are always cordial and accomodating. One time my wife wanted a buko fruit (young coconut) and they were out as there was a weeding party the night before and everything was consumed! The lady offered to cut the buko from one of the Coconut lanscape located at the front! To me it was good service to satisfy a guest. We were booked at the Executive Sunview room for 2 nights and ended with 3 just because the wife enjoyed the view so much that she felt like a millionaire! We only ate one lunch and one breakfast. The breakfast was good and actually too much for my consumption. Lunch was comparable but never leaser to the other restaurants around. I would like to return to this place again!

I spent a few nights in that resort, just nearby the beach. I had actually two different rooms, both air cond. The first one was a standard one, quite clean and good on the ground floor. The second one was standard deluxe, with bigger windows, flat screen -however signal was bad. Both the bathroom and the room itself were very clean; mini bar was included.
There's a small swimming pool in the middle of the resort, which is nice, but too bad there are only two deckchairs.
I did not try the restaurant.
Staff is nice, there's always someone at reception and also a computer guests can use to connect the internet - that avoids going to the internet cafe, so it's very practical.
The resort is quiet, sometimes staff's around the swimming pool chating. maybe would it be disturbing sometimes.

We stayed at the Lost Horizon Resort at the suite room with jacuzzi for three nights.Room was on the second floor above the diving centre and facing the sea which was excellent.Found it rather simple with very basic facilities.Hot water for the shower was shut off early evening and the water pressure was pretty weak.Besides that, the service was excellent.Everyone was so friendly and accomodating.Good variety of food at the restaurant.Other resorts like the Isis Bungalow,Alona Palm Beach and the Amorita are of walking distance away and there are lots of other restaurants around.Money changer is just around the corner and there are small convenient stores if you require drystores. Not very much of entertainment at night.Very good location. Not over crowded, quiet and peaceful.Had a wonderful stay.

My fiance and I chose Lost Horizon because they have new rooms and after reading reviews on other Alona Beach resorts, we thought it would be a good moderately priced hotel. On alona beach, either you stay in Alona Palms, pay so much but get 5 star service and amenities or stay in resorts with low rates but have problems during your stay (like itchy sheets, lack of hot water, poor service, etc.)

What we liked about the place:

1. The room was clean.

2. Internet Access. There was a computer you can use for 15 minutes for internet browsing and Wifi access within the resort. But the PC needs upgrading. 15 minutes isn't enough time to check your email since the PC is too slow!

What we didn't like about the place:

1. Service was terrible! Our room was Modern Deluxe situated on the ground floor. There was repainting being done on some rooms above us so there was a tall ladder near our door, and debris was all over the area where a chair and table were provided for relaxation or hanging out. They could have at least cleaned the area every time the work was done for the day!

When we decided to swim one afternoon, about 6 men (from the staff, some were wearing uniforms, some were not) were hanging out by the pool, sitting and lounging in the pool beds. Since the pool is just small, there were just 2 beds. We didn't go in the pool. The staff love to STARE and male staff particularly TALK about guests in bikinis! I overheard about 3 male staff and 1 female staff talking about a female guest showering before going in the pool. The staff also likes to sit and hang out at one of the guest beds provided outside the economy house where many people share economy rooms. It's like their hang out place when they are not doing anything. Many just sit around, and talk. Then there was one time the manager needed something to ask her staff to do. She shouted it out from far away instead of just going to him to give her instructions. They are lazy and not courteous at all.

Another bad experience was when they made up our room without our permission. They don't have the don't disturb signs or make up room signs so when you leave your room (I guess they take note of when you leave or not) they clean your room automatically. They didn't have a safe so some of our important stuff were left in the room since we couldn't bring all of it. Nothing was lost but when we got there, they didn't even greet us. I was mortified when I saw the dirty comforter on top of the other bed where I laid all our clean clothes and other stuff. He put it there to change the sheets of one of the beds.

2. Pool. Pool should undergo maintenance at night, after swimming hours, not during the afternoon. OR not on weekends when there are many guests checked in.

3. Cable TV. There was no cable signal for most of our stay.

4. Poor acoustics. The room had thin walls. We could hear the group of girls shouting next door, staff conversations outside and the vehicles passing by.

5. Beach. The reviews I read are right on the dot. There was just not enough beach area to hang out at. They don't clean their beach front and it's not as nice as the beach front of Alona Palm, and the ones in the middle like Pyramid and Alona Vida. I guess their resort was built too near the ocean, hence the resort is elevated and protected by breakwater.

We booked thru the resort website and had a great rate (with a 20% senior citizen discount upon check out). Checking in was fast and easy, took less than 5 minutes. The resort is located right along Alona Beach and it has a nice swimming pool. The rooms are clean and well-kept. Our room had a huge bathroom and fresh towels are given everyday. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We didn't try the food at the resort because it was a bit high (ex. hamburger & fries for about 190pesos, compared to about 60pesos @ Trudis Place - a nearby resto/apartelle). All in all, 4 our of 5 stars.
