Had a lovely cruise down to the Green Isle and hack on Saturday afternoon. Good company on the boat and lovely service. It takes a good day weatherwise but I suspect whatever the weather this would be a memorable trip. We had some songs and live music on board but I suspect this happens quite a lot in this area renowned for its musicians and steeped in history and culture. Great nature watching in a tranquil place with no roads or vehicles for miles.

We did this trip on a Monday during the May heatwave of 2012. We had been to the Glenfinnan Visitor Centre on Sunday and picket up the leaflet but waited until Monday morning to check the weather, as there were rumours that it was breaking up. Not a chance, still very warm and we wanted a way of seeing the scenery without having to walk or drive too much, so booked on the 2 hour 10.45 cruise to Glenaladale.
The boat is boarded from a pier in the grounds of Glenfinnan House Hotel, and when we were aboard were greeted by the skipper who said that we would first go towards the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the Jacobite steam train (Fort William - Mallaig) which turned up in reasonable time but no steam because it was so hot! Then we turned to motor along the loch in the direction of Glenaladale. It is very quiet and peaceful and the boat goes suitably slowly so that the engine noise is not intrusive. Neither is the commentary - the skipper tells you things when he thinks they will highlight your experience, it is not a non-stop commentary and all the better for that. It was wonderful to cruise slowly along with the surrounding water mitigating the heat - a perfect cruise for a hot day. There was also wildlife - a common gull nesting colony, deer (very high up) and even a golden eagle. But the beautiful unspoilt scenery won the day for me. I think there are refreshments down below but everyone seemed to be so caught up in the magic of the loch that they weren't used. Highly recommended.

Had read about Captain Jim and he was everything the article said he was. He made it a most enjoyable outing and is extremely knowledgable. One of the highlights of our 2 week plus trip.

We booked the two hour trip to Glenaladale, and were the only two on the boat. Jim made us very welcome and we set off down the beautiful Loch Sheil. For anyone interested in the history of the area and the wildlife, this trip is a must. We sat at the front with a hot chocolate and shortbread - whilst Jim gave a commentary about the Loch and the Glen. On the way back Jim pointed out a Golden Eagle soaring high above a ridge; Red deer on the hillsides; a beautiful very large patch of wild primroses; Black Throated Divers etc.....wonderful. Had lunch at the Glenfinnan hotel in front of a lovely fire - came outside and stood listening to the Cuckoo, then as we were leaving, a red Squirrel ran in front of us. Magic day. We will definitely return for the full day's cruise. Fantastic.
