Alpenhotel Hundsreitlehen
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Bischofswiesen
Reviewed June 30, 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed a seven night stay here as part of a small Naturetrek tour group. Because we paid as part of a larger package it's impossible to comment on price or value. The hotel is located in a somewhat isolated site, certainly part of its appeal, about a five minute drive from Bischofswiesen or perhaps a 20 minute walk, mostly uphill. Consequently, a vehicle is almost a necessity especially if you plan to travel to any of the nearby places of interest – Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, Konigsee, etc. Don't come here expecting a doorman, valet parking, or fancy shopping – thankfully it's not that kind of place.

The eco-friendly hotel and accompanying buildings are located in the midst of well maintained natural meadows and forests. Expect to see wildlife such as badgers, foxes, all kinds of birds, and abundant plants. Hotel Hundsreitlehen is a family-run business overseen by husband and wife Marcus and Angelika (always with a genuine smile) with help from their children and and a very friendly staff. Evening meals, usually featuring at least one traditional Bavarian selection and always a vegetarian choice, are expertly prepared by chef Marcus and portions are generous. The typical German hotel breakfast is served buffet style with cooked to order eggs available. Meals can be taken in the large, airy dining room or eaten outdoors weather permitting.

Almost all rooms have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, though some (single rooms perhaps) in the back are far less stunning. Our spacious room had a very comfortable bed, good storage, an indoor seating area, and a generous size balcony with a great view. The bathroom was adequate though not large, and shelf space was skimpy. Cleanliness in our room and throughout the hotel was spotless and housekeeping service was prompt each day.

The only real complaint is the obstinate and sometimes weak Wi-Fi service (free) which realistically is available only in or near the 'computer room'. This is probably not a major drawback; in fact, it may force guests to spend more time enjoying the beautiful surroundings and the family atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and mountain view.

We stayed here for two nights on our way back home after holidaying in Austria and Slovenia. The hotel is a beautiful building in a stunning location with fantastic mountain views. We were a little disappointed in the room we had after reading the reviews here - it was very spacious, the bed was comfortable, but it was under the roof and overlooking the carpark, which meant that early in the morning we were disturbed by cars crunching over gravel. It must have been one of the rooms still to be modernised - although spotlessly clean, the decor could do with some updating to make it feel more friendly! It was missing some personal touches.
Having said that, what we did love was that the staff were so friendly and that we had two extremely delicious meals in the restaurant (with the stunning views!). The hotel advertises that the owner cooks personally - and he really does it well - we both agreed that they were the best meals we had had during the holiday (and we had a few :-)). Breakfast was also excellent - one reviewer has said here that it was basic, but I would not agree - there was plenty of variety and everything was very fresh and homemade. A typical German hotel breakfast, but at the top end of the quality scale.
So...a bit of a mixed experience - but good on the whole! With a different room it would probably have been perfect!

We stayed in this hotel from 9-16 June 2013. Set in the country side overlooking a valley with the alps as a back drop this alpine chalet hotel is everything we could have wished for. We received a warm welcome from the owners Marcus and Angelika and the service we received from Angelika and her staff was attentive and friendly. The continental breakfast was good and the evening meals excellent. Our room was superb with comfortable beds and a shower that didn't leak water all over the floor. Our stay was a delightful experience.

Wonderful reception from Marcus and Angelika, the owners who live on the premises. Glorious setting in the hills above the town with views to die for. All the staff we completely charming and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were beautifully appointed, large, warm and comfortable and were even better than shown on the website! The food was excellent - big breakfast buffet and traditional Bavarian cooking in the evenings. Everything highly recommended.

Room Tip: There is a fitness / wellness centre but we didn't use it

We stayed for two nights in mid-August. We had booked the place but were little bit worried since there were not too many reviews in this forum. We are glad, we ignored the lack of reviews & decided to spend our time here. Like other reviewers on the site have already mentioned, the hotel is located in most beautiful part of the little hamlet on top of mountain with unobstructed views of mountains and meadows. It may be challenging to get to the hotel if you are not driving. We had chosen a family room that included a small room (almost a walk-in closet size!) for children with a door and a skylight in the roof. Our kids loved it but we recommend leaving door open since there is no ventilation in the room. Looked like it was all new or recently renovated. Beds were nice and comfortable. There was even a small fridge in the room. Our room had a nice view of the mountains. We encountered ingenious German engineering the first time in a seemingly low tech door to the balcony. The door either swings open like a normal door if the handle is turned one way and it swings open from top about 10 degrees for ventilation if the handle is turned up! First we thought that the door must be broken but soon realized the ingenuous mechanism. Only down side was that it was on the third floor, making luggage transfer a bit troublesome and Wifi reception was also poor. The included breakfast was just basic: bread, yogurt, cereal, and coffee. We did not check what other things they had since we are vegetarians. The B&B is very conveniently located for making a day trip to Salzburg, Austria (only 45 minutes North) or the Berchtesgaden national park. The owner was helpful with local sightseeing directions. We would definitely love to return in future.

Room Tip: Ask for room on the side above the restaurant with a private balcony.

What a wonderful find. Perched in the foothills of the Alps, the rooms and patio all boast a perfect view of meadows and Alps and forests and big sky...and no other structures. The most-generous owner picked us up at the Bischofswiesen station -- the last before Brechtesgaden -- and settled us in very clean and comfortable rooms. The quality of the meals (we at all dinners and breakfasts at the hotel) allow you to not have to stress about getting up and down the mountain to dine -- excellent fare, good wines, and (of course) the view. And in the end, the bill was rather a pleasant surprise -- some might consider it a steal. Really a wonderful, relaxing spot that I would love to return to.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the mountains!
