Blue Monkey Beach Cottages
Reviewed March 7, 2013

Blue Monkey Cottages is a great place to stay if you want to get away from the busy life. It is very peaceful and harmonic. The cottages has its own little beach, they have snorkel and googles if you need to borrow. The owners live in one of the cottages, but if you are a group of more than five they will move out of their cottage and give it to you.You will also be alone in the cottages, they only book in one group og couple at a time. Amina and Faysal are helpful and give you all the information you need to have a good stay, they organize to pick you up in Shimoni. They also have a lot of cats, just so you know. We didn't bring plastic shooes but we should have. If you bring you can explore the beach right outside the cottages. The beach is full of sea urchins and corals.

During our backpacker trip along the coast of Kenia we stopped on Wasini Island and found this lovely pace: 2 comfortable cottages with sea view, a great terrace and a lovely bay, which belongs to the cottages, where you can hang out and enjoy the sun and the beach.
The owners are super nice and welcoming and they give you all information you need. Beds are good, the food (cooked by the owner) is yummy and served on your demand (just tell them before when you like to eat). There is no restaurant or bar on the island, but we managed to get everything we need for a decent price (water, fruits and even beer). Yes, there are no showers in the cottages, but you get easily used to it. Since there is no groundwater on the island, it is easy to respect the eco-toilets and the bucket of water for your shower.
Yes, there are nicer beaches along the kenian coast, BUT it is still possible to swim and snorkling has been fantastic! Maybe you bring some plastic shoes, which you might need for your further travel in Kenya anyways.
We'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the owners for making our stay so fantastic. Definitly we'll be back and recommend this place to everyone travelling to Kenya.

Peaceful and nice cottages facing the Indian Ocean. It is the perfect place if you want to be in contact with nature. No running water and no gas. You'll have to use eco-friendly toilets and light up your own fire if you want to cook yourself. The electricity is through solar panel.
You can still ask full board option, and you'll be served delicious Swahili specialties.

Wasini Island is also a nice place, with a stunning "dead coral garden" and lots of friendly people.

Be equipped if you are planning to spend few days on the island and if you are on a tight budget. Beers and drinking water are really expensive on the island, so bring yours.

The best thing to carry with you would be also a cooler box that can be plugged to electricity, because there are also no fridges on the island (which also means fresh fish everyday!!)

Take the best out of your stay: bring with you plastic shoes because when the tight is low you'll have to walk quite a bit to reach the see and your snorkling equipment if you have a good one. Ah, and you must pay a visit to the Marine Park! Talk with Amina from the Blue Cottages to get a good deal to go there!
