We have just returned from a fantastic holiday at the Barcelo Formentor.

If you enjoy old fashioned luxury, then this is the place for you. The lack of flash new money was a pleasant surprise as we were looking forward to a relaxing week at this renowned hotel. It may not have a new gym, or a bar in the pool but that's its appeal...and don't forget to bring your smart trousers for the evening dinner (men!), no shorts allowed.

If you like to meet lots of new people, this won't be for you, as those people who come back year after year love to keep themselves to themselves!

Don't try and save money on your initial booking, a sea view with terrace is vital, and there are only 12 out of the 112 rooms, and whilst you are there the small amount of increase in booking one of these rooms is about equivalent to a days food and drink!! Even when compared to other 5 stars, it is eye wateringly expensive for refreshments. Let's look at some examples, house champagne £32 per glass compared with £24 at the Ritz! Evening meal has a choice of A la carte or a buffet ( £45 each). If your thinking that the accommodation price is good value, please be aware of the extras....we budgeted for £250 per day! The sunbeds on the beach are priced to prevent non residents using them, but at £50 for a bed style version, most residents baulked at the thought themselves.

Also be aware that there in no shop within 10k, so you have no option to 'top-up' during your stay.

But if price is the only thing to complain about, I don't think that's bad....do you?

In summary we loved our stay, had a great week, just make sure you're sitting down when you get your room bill.

Room Tip: Always ask for a sea view terrace, but these book up first!

As others say, an exclusive 5 star hotel in an isolated position on the island. Magnificent immaculate gardens and fantastic views although partially hidden by trees. Past guest list is a whos who of history - including Dali and Churchill (who has a suite named after him). Extremely attentive staff. Excellent service, good choice and quality food at breakfast and lunch. Food and drink are expensive as one expects in an isolated exclusive hotel; and there's no other alternative choice locally. Therefore beach loungers and Parasols also expensive -now 60 euros a day for the best ones. Stay 50 yards away by the pool however and they're free so you can chose not to pay for them.

If you're prepared for a substantial bill, you'll love it. We will go back.

Negative points:- pathetic tiny gym room with a single broken multigym. No bike hire at hotel,
Not the hotels fault, but our taxi driver didn't know where it was - it's that far out and exclusive!

Room Tip: Sea view, - its why you're at a seaside hotel! Although the mountain view is pretty impressive too.Few have balconies, and sea partially obscured by trees which have grown since it was built.

this hotel is very very secluded and very expensive = 2 coffees and a fresh squeesed juice as of 28th april 2012 = 21 euros. scenery wise and garden wise = close to the best in mayorca . mountain backdrop and tranquil gardens facing unspoilt bay and hills , you do feel its a select part of mayorca . if u like a little stroll turn right out of the HOTEL garden gates eventually U reach a little sandy beach and a cafe resteraunt again expensive and mostly full of day trippers between 12 and 4 pm. THE ADDRESS IS CONFUSING = its way over the mountains about a 20 minute wonderful ride from port a pollenca. in fact alcudia is closer to p pollenca than pollenca is to formentor hotel ??????

Room Tip: only 12 balconyed rooms in whole hotel .

This superb hotel with a long list of distinguished clientale lies in a secluded bay. The water is sparkling, the beach a half moon sweep of sand. The hotel is surrounded by lovely gardens and woods. The service has always been outstanding whether you are a king or just a day tripper looking to enjoy a drink on the terrace and admire the view.
