“:Lovely hotel, shame about......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2008

Good Points:
A really attractive, clean (and regularly cleaned) place to stay, with very pleasant and helpful staff. Good Catering

Bad points:
PA system is geared up for the very aurally challenged! If you don't like the music being played you have no chance of listening to your own (as we gave up trying to do), because the Hotel's music blasts out at 110 decibels across the complex. It's exactly the same when there is live entertainment in the bar, even late in the evening. There is no escape!

If you enjoy sitting out on the balcony, enjoying a quiet drink and a chat, try to get a room on the outside of the buildings (i.e. not facing the pool area),

Kitchen - you couldn't swing a mouse's tail, let alone a cat! It comprises a sink unit/drainer with two electric rings and a microwave. Total floor area to stand/work in is approximately 10 sq.ft. (c. 1 sq.metre)

The "10 minute walk to town" is nearer 20 minutes to the first run of bars/restaurants on the lovely Pine Walk. It's nearer 30 minutes to the town centre itself.

  • Liked — Clean,liness, staff
  • Disliked — Incredibly loud music/PA system. Distance from town centre

We have spent two weeks at the Playa Mar each October for the last six years. The complex is very attractive, not too big and well managed. All the staff are friendly and helpful.
The apartments are more than adequate, smallish kitchen area but good sized bathroom and large balcony. Regularly cleaned, sheets, towels changed etc.
This is a Thomson Superfamily hotel and all the Thomson staff work really hard to keep everbody happy. Our kids are now a bit old for the Children's Club but are still keen to participate in other family activities. The hotel's own Entertainment Manager Daz is an all round good guy so must give him a mention !
Puerto Pollesa is a beautiful resort and the Playa Mar is situated at the far end of the Pine Walk so it is about a 20 minute walk to get to the main resort. This could be a problem if you had small children although taxis are plentiful.
We usually eat in the town (current favourites-Coral,Can Ferra,Tots,La Piazza ) but the hotel food does seem to have improved over the years and the half board option is good value.
The main beach is in the town but there is a narrow beach a few minutes from the hotel which certainly in October is never that crowded.
Loads and loads to explore in this part of Mallorca - Pollensa and Alcudia Old Towns,Nature reserve at Albufeira,Tramuntana Mountains,Formentor,Cala San Vicente,Boquer Valley Lluc Monastery and there is still the rest of the island !!!!!
For more serious walkers have a look at mallorcawalkingtours/puertopollensa.com. A day out with Rich Strutt is always great fun even on the odd occasions when the sun does not shine

I first visited this hotel when I was 15 with my parents, and last visited it this year as a 23 year old with her boyfriend. I honestly love it here, the room, the pool, the staff and the location are all fantastic. I'm a keen walker so for the hotel to be at the end of the pine walk is a treat for me! I also love the food at snack bar, for me it is reasonably priced and doesn't fill me up to the point that I can't eat for the rest of the day as I loved to go out into the Square and eat out every night! The reps were also fantastic and I found them quite honest about their excursions, I know they get commission so for a rep to advice me not to book a show due to my epilepsy showed the type of people working there.

Overall I love it here and would go back in a heartbeat!

Just back from 2 wks half board @ Playa Mar it was really good. Exceeded expectations after reading some of reviews prior to going on 26 Sept.
Myself, husband & 3-yr old daughter had a great time - Peurto Pollensa is lovely and the hotel was fine. The cleaning/housekeeping was a bit of a hit & miss I have to admit but the atmosphere and staff made up for it.
Meals were always nice - obviously not Michellin-star but tasty and plenty of it.
The Thomson Reps were wonderful and Thomson the Dog was a huge hit with our daughter who couldn't wait to go to the mini-disco at night to see him & the reps, particularly Looney Laura, Sparkly Steve, Fizzy Fab & Diva Dani!! They must really like their jobs as they are so natural with the kids and the kids love them.
On 1st October the evening entertainment moved inside and this quietened down the noise from outside which was a bonus if you didn't want to listen to it.
The pools though were absolutely freezing - the sea was a lot warmer and we preferred the beach to the constant poolside entertainment but as the beach is only 2 mins away it was no hardship.
We had a hire car for 3 days and it was well worth it to go exploring the island.
And finally - go to the Pirate Show!!! It's quite dear (expecially if there's more than 3 of you) but sooo worth it - spectacular is an understatement.

Myself, my partner and two children (aged 3 and 21 months) stayed at the Playa Mar from 20th September til 4th October and what can i say.................................................fantastic atmosphere at all times (even when it was raining which it did whilst we were there).

Firstly the hotel and its surroundings are beautiful and really well maintained. The reception staff are very friendly and will go out of their way to help with any problems you may have (although we never had a problem). The bar/restaurant staff are great too, there were a couple of them that were a bit sarcastic and miserable but the rest were fine, even entertaining kids at dinner. Even the maintenance guys were friendly and said "hola".

The apartments are big enough and very clean. Plenty of wardrobe space and drawers etc. The kitchenette is small but that wasn't a problem as we were half board anyway. Only thing is the tiny cups and glasses which were a waste of time. The t.v. was ok with cbeebies which was good cos' my kids love it. No problems there.

We went on a half board basis and didn't regret it because the food was great with plenty of choice for adults and kids. On first looking at the restaurant i thought it was a bit small but there were enough seats for everyone.

Next on to the entertainment, and its no lie when i say all of the Thomson reps work their socks off all day long. Sparkly Steve and Loony Laura (Hairy Dave) are fantastic as the entertainers and great with the kids and the parents. They love their job and it shows. It's a shame it's Sparkly's last year as a rep. Such a good team!!!!!! The daytime entertainment was good, with teasers and quizzes round the pool everyday. The same for the night time, the professional AND the reps shows are equally great entertainment for all. Thomson the dog is a big hit with the kids and the mini disco is fab. The reps aren't too intrusive, if you want to join in you can, but if not that's fine. Our daughter didn't want to go go to kids club but we took our son to toddlerzone and he loved it, the kids reps were lovely. Amazing family orientated complex. The entertainment was finished by 10.30 every night which was fine because i don't go on holiday to be in bed by 8pm. We had a pool view room right by the stage and there was no noise at all when we went to bed. The only downside was the small bar where the entertainment was held when it was raining. Not enough seats for everyone.

Before going to Playa Mar i read a few reviews about sunbed reserving but there were plenty of beds for everyone and some stacked up too. The pool area is lovely and the pool itself is massive. Very clean. This being a good thing because the beach (small coves) aren't great and a sunbed will cost 15e for the day.

Maid service is frequent enough. They don't speak any english but are still friendly. There are safety deposit boxes available for a small charge but we didn't get one and nothing went missing, even mobiles left on show were left alone.

Drinks in the hotel are expensive at 3.50e for a fruit shoot but we just bought a bottle of dilute juice and some water from the shop next door (much cheaper alternative). The shop is very small and the taking of buggies inside is prohibited.

Puerto Pollensa is beautiful but very quiet. The walk from the hotel to where all the shops and restaurants are is a long one and very bumpy, especially with two buggies. We used to go the "back way" which was much flatter. There is a good selection of restaurants but being half board we only went for a chinese one night.

Marineland is great with fantastic dolphin/sealion shows. A bit on the expensive side though at 118e for 3 of us (my son was free due to being under 2 years).

All in all we had a fantastic holiday at the Playa Mar, if only it was in a more central location, i would definately return.

Thank you to all staff and reps that made our holiday brilliant.

Worth it's 4* without a doubt!!!!!

Overall excellent aparthotel lots of activities for children through the day family friendly swimming pool and surroundings.
Restaurant was reasonable 15 euro each for dinner and only 3euro for breakfast if both booked together.
Only issue at Hotel was the volume of noise from the evening entertainment on a number of evenings, the Hotel recognised there was an ongoing problem and whilst it may not affect everyone those with apartments nearest the stage are not likely to get any sleep until after if finishes at 11.00pm.
The pine walk is not particulary ideal for children in pushchairs as it is difficult to push on the crazy paving footpath, the walk along the main road is 20/25mins into the centre of Puerto Pollensa.
Overall excellent base to explore the north area of majorca and we would return to the Playa Mar

My wife and I have just returned from this facility yesterday. Staff are utterly wonderful apart from the somewhat sarcastic and surly snack bar staff. We were robbed on the second night on the Pine Walk (beware - the 70s grab and snatch on a pushbike merchants have returned) and the reception staff were magnificent in sorting cards being reprogrammed, getting the police etc.

Very clean, good apartments. I agree more of a three star.
If you do go be warned – there are some basic kitchen utensils missing like a corkscrew, decent sized glasses and bread knife. The mini market on site is tiny, very basic and there are no supermarkets of say Lanzarote standards any where near in Puerto Pollensa (the best being Voramar about two thirds of a mile away).

Indoor pool is a big bath…the fitness facilities are a domestic usage bike and stepper ….

If you like Butlins you will love the atmosphere. Sometimes adults without kids don’t feel completely left out - but that was for all of two of the fourteen nights when they held a quiz and had entertainers who were not embarrassing. I must stress the quality of entertainment for kids is marvellous and the Family Club team work their collective socks off –I am simply trying to actively discourage couples from going .

Also, the official literature does stress this is a family venue so we knew we were taking a risk. However, we honestly didn't expect such a high percentage of families at this time of year. We thought going in term time might limit kids but it didn’t – it just meant more under fives….

I’m quite deaf requiring two hearing aids and even I was kept awake – OK lets play Scrabble on the balcony and join in we thought – oh dear the balcony lights have been turned off ….

Food is excellent and can be bought on a daily basis
Lovely modern design with excellent flora around the place give a light airy feel

In short if you are a young family get booked now -everybody else - PLEASE think very carefully about going to this facility
