“Great holiday hotel and resort though poor check in experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2013

We stayed at the playa mar hotel with our two boys (aged 6 & 8) from late July to early August for 10 nights.

We were met upon check in at 11.30am with fruit & cava & then told we could not access our apartment until after 6pm due to other guests booking late check outs (apparently via Thomson). It was eventually 9pm when we gained access. We were later told by the Thomson rep that any delay after the 6pm deadline was down to the hotel despite the hotel being put in the predicament by Thomson accepting payment for the late check outs on point of booking in the UK. We were not alone in this situation as I believe up to 4 families had the same issue. We were given lunch (on Thomson), dinner (on the hotel) and a safety deposit box after haggling, the spa was offered to us by the hotel for showers but we found it locked up when we tried to use it, though the manager did sort this out for us. I don't want this to reflect on the hotel (or its staff) as it was Thomson who have taken payment twice for the same apartments. We will be in touch with Thomson management in the near future with regards to the situation we found ourselves in.

Once in and settled we found the hotel and the resort to be fantastic. We did upgrade from self catering to half board on some days and found the breakfasts and dinners to be excellent quality, there was always a good variety and the staff helpful and cheerful all of the time, our youngest turned six while we were there and the staff went out of their way to make his day special, in particular Tolo and Donna. The resort is beautiful and we had a few evening meals out of the hotel. The pine walk is a must and the little beaches along it are great.

Some reviewers have commented on problems with air conditioning, we had no issue as long as both balcony doors were closed. If you want it to operate while out so you come back to a cool room you will need an additional key to leave in the slot (if removed the electricity to the apartment is cut off). Our room was cleaned daily, the kitchen though small was adequate.

The sun bed situation is a little out of control, on our first full day we walked through the pool area on the way to breakfast at 8am and noted all beds taken up with towels, though a number are left chained up until after 10am.

The entertainment was good for the kids though a little repetitive, we found our kids spent most of the evenings in the play park next door rather than the by the stage area.

The water slides and the swimming pools are excellent and were a huge hit with our kids, the Thomson staff worked hard throughout out the day keeping people entertained, the crab slide was a big hit with our youngest.

All in all this was a great holiday marred slightly by the check in issue at the start. This aside we would stay here again as the staff make this a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Blocks 1 and 4 are further from the entertainment stage and so quieter late on, top floors best to a...

We stayed at Playa Mar mid July all inclusive. We have been before but was some years before, our normal resort was Cala Bona and the Bonaire Hotel.

Had a fantastic time, arrived at hotel and greeted by cava, juice, fruit and biscuits. Room in block 3 facing play park, side view of pool and lovely view of mountains. Lovely room all recently refurbished, kitchen small but did not affect us. Food was fabulous and we were impressed that the restuarant was open at 6am for continental breakfast on day of departure. Entertainment team were fab lovely to see Ashaboo again and she, Healther and Ali G made my sons holiday. The playa mar staff were all exceptional keeping everything clean and tidy and nothing too much trouble. Special mention to Tolo in restuarant who is fab and credit to hotel. Only issue is sunbeds, did find it annoying that people reserved these the night before, not sure how hotel deal with this but think need to. I did use the Spa facilities and these were also fab. As say food was fab my son especially loved chocolate fountain. Only thing I missed at breakfast was pancakes this would just make things perfect!!!
Love Pollenca such a beautiful place.

We have already booked for next July for Playa Mar again, cant wait to see everyone.

Thanks for a fab holiday
Karen and Matthew x

We have just returned from a 10 night all inclusive stay at the Playa Mar and can highly recommend this hotel. My children aged 3 and 6 had a great time, everything was perfect for them. The hotel staff are exceptional. The rooms are basic but clean and the food in the restaurant catered for all tastes and was to a high standard. My kids enjoyed the kids club and the evening entertainment. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

We stayed with our two children, max 6, darcy 3, for 10 nights at the end of july into august. I have to say this is one of the best hotels we have stayed at. We arrived mid afternoon and were greeted with a glass of cava or juice and plenty of fresh fruit, which the kids loved, while we checked in. Our room was basic, but clean and had everything we required. The kitchenette is small, but we were all inclusive, and didnt intend on doing any cooking!! I have read reviews complaining about the air conditioning, we had no trouble and ours worked fine, you just have to make sure all patio doors are closed properly for it to kick in. we have also read some reviews complaining of noise at night, again we didnt find this a problem, we stayed in block 3 room 102, which was facing the park and the night entertainment, but with patio doors closed noise was never a problem.
The pool and grounds were immaculately clean, and the kids (and grown ups!) loved the slides, and the main pool was lovely and warm, even first thing in the morning. Now to the issue of SUNBEDS!!!!! We actually didnt have a problem, and the hotel is doing its best. Some beds and parasols were left out for the idiots to reserve at stupid times in the morning ( actually saw someone at midnight with their towells!!) The others were chained up and not unlocked until 10am. This guaranteed a sun bed, but not always a parasol, as the selfish ones realised if you unscrewed the brolly from its base you could release it from the chains and therefore not wait until 10am!! you also get those who reserve the best position and then dont appear by the pool ALL DAY!! however we stayed for 10 days and had 4 sunbeds and parasol everyday, just by going at 10am. I cant see what more the hotel can do..
This was our first time going All Inclusive, and after reading some reviews I wasnt expecting too much, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the food was excellant quality with plenty of choice every day. the restaurant had a lovely feel to it and not like a canteen that I had been expecting. The staff could nt do enough for you, and always made the children feel special.
The evening entertainment was the usual for thomson holidays, a bit cheesy but the kids love it! and the reps didnt stop all day and night entertaining the children. Our children didnt use any of the kids clubs, so cant comment on them.
We only ventured out of the hotel a few times, but peuto pollensa is lovely. The pine walk to the town centre is very pituresque, but it is quite a long walk for young ones and the uneven path makes it hard work with a pram or buggy. we opted for a taxi , which was 5 euros.
overall we had an amazing holiday and we will definately be coming back next year!

Room Tip: Blocks 1 and 4 are the furthest away from evening entertainment

We stayed with our 2 sons (3&5) for 2 weeks (end June/beg July) It was our first time to stay here and we were delighted with the resort and the fantastic service from all of the staff but in particular thanks to Angie, Tolo & Danny. Our youngest son became ill on the second day and within 40 minutes the doctor had been to our room and Danny had personally driven us to collect the prescription.
The boys loved the entertainment and kids clubs and the Thompson Staff were terrific, energetic and cannot be praised highly enough. Play area was also very good for the younger kids.
We have already recommended it to friends and we look forward to visiting this resort again!

Room Tip: We were in block 2 which was away from pool area - Room 208/209 would be good

The team at this resort are to say the least Fantastic, they all work very hard.
Whatever they are paying the Thompson reps, Entertainment team, Restaurant staff and bar staff it is just not enough.
We are so untidy on holiday so I have to say the unsung heroes are the cleaners. Every single day our room was kept as clean as it was when we first walked in.
The food presentation and choice was very good, in-fact my only criticism was that the salt and pepper pots were the wrong way round – if I may make a suggestion fresh pancakes at breakfast would be a great option for the kids.
A big well done to Donna and Tolo in the restaurant, they made a big fuss of the kids at every opportunity – polite courteous and nothing is too much trouble.
The Playa Mar feels very safe which in turn allowed us to relax
A special mention to the children’s reps they work tirelessly to ensure the kids are entertained, their patience and resilience are a virtue and every parents saviour – too many to mention individually but thank you all!
The Manager Danny is approachable and very friendly (we even saw him picking up litter.).
We had a fantastic two weeks well done Playa Mar and well done Thompson!
We would definitely return to this hotel.

My wife and I along with our 2 daughters (2 & 5) stayed here for 2 weeks (July 2 -16). No need to repeat all the previous reviews as we agree with mostly everything positive stated. Our kids had a great time which matters most to us. The staff do work so hard and I do pity the poor person in the Thomson suit. Location - great and the Spar up the road is value and tasty. The pine walk was a favourite for us.
Sun bed/umbrella situation at hotel was in need of control. I like many others am an early riser but I found I had to place towels down earlier and earlier each morning ultimately hitting 5 am!! We only used 2 beds as kids don't need one.
Concern: I discovered that non-residents staying in other hotels and apartments close by were also reserving sun beds and on one occasion they only arrived back to use them at 2 pm. They had been reserved at 7 am!!
