“Really great mix for a relaxing family holiday”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

The Playa Mar is a great hotel and with the changes that were made this year I think has definitley moved up a notch from previous visits which were great anyway. The hotel is really friendly, the staff are excellent, the pools were great and with the crab slide added this year, there is more sunbed space whilst still having the facilities to keep the kids interested and entertained. Also new this year was the dedicated entertainment building which provided the setting for all the entertainment and had a big screen for sporting events. This also provided a sun awning for the bar area for that needed break from the midday sun. This will also get a Spa for next year in the basement of this building which looks great when we got a sneaky peek.

Pine walks is great really pretty and tranquil location, there is a great mixture of resturants and some bars with a couple of clubs for the older ones. The prices vary but can be expensive although there are some good bargins out there too.

We went self catering and this meant we had to pay for drinks whilst at the hotel, these were somewhat expensive but there were no problems with bringing our supermarket bought drinks into the pool or bar area so this cost can be controlled, there was no rules on only hotel bought stuff which was great. Eating in the hotel was a nice break from the pretty high prices in some of the pine walks resturants. The selection of food was good and always refreshed daily, most of the food is prepared in front on you so that gave us confidence it was fresh and whilst nothing leaped out is was tasty and filling and we went away happy. They also arranged a cake for my sons birthday which was good and again showed the helpfulness of the staff.

All in all we had four families at the Playa Mar, one of which had been before and we all thought it was a great holiday and would very much recommend this for any family.

If you go with thompson as we did, Dont go on the arrranged water park visit arrange it through the hotel yourself direct, choose a day the arranged visits are not running and it will work out cheaper. Also Pirates is excellent would very much recommend this for adults and children, go for the quarterdeck seats though!

Room Tip: Go for block 3 or 2 facing the pool area

Have literally just got home from a 10 night stay at the Playa Mar. We went as a family group with six adults and two boys aged 5 and 3.
The Playa Mar was immaculate and cannot be faulted on cleanliness, which for me with small children is a must. The rooms were actually really good in size with a wardrobe in the bedroom and in the living area which worked perfectly storing both adult and kids clothes. There is a small kitchenette but we never used it as we were all inclusive. The pull out beds were also great for our boys in the living area. The rooms could do with some updating but as we were only there to sleep and shower we weren't really that bothered.
The food was always of good quality and plenty of it! The only area that could be improved when dining could be the children's meals. It was alpha bites and pizza everyday at every meal with another alternative of either veg or pasta with it. As others have said they can also eat from the adult section too but variation is an option. The kids sweetie area on the other hand was genius! A great way of getting the kids to eat with the reward of choosing some sweets when they have cleared their plates! The staff in the dining room are lovely and always smile and chat when working which is lovely, we got a bit of banter going as our time wore on.
The pool area is AMAZING for kids. Our boys spent hours playing in the pools and eventually plucked up the courage to go on the bigger crab slide on our last day and literally had to be dragged away. The sun bed problem is unfortunate but one that happens everywhere. Towels on empty beds for hours not good, more parasols are required but that is the same problem and they are next to the empty beds!
The reps and entertainment at the Playa Mar are second to none. The stage area is really quite impressive and there are things going on all day to keep the kids (and grown ups) entertained. Fab Fay, Jonny Rocks and the lovely Becky boots deserve a mention here, they work tirelessly hard and to be honest are brilliant! Memories of shake shake and chocolate will live on for a while! If you are there when the Sister Act show is there it was our favourite with some very talented ladies. The bar is great too with waiter service in the evening, the lovely Leo is our family favourite and seemed to be always in work and always smiling! Our boys did kids club a few times and really enjoyed themselves so a special thanks to the ladies that work so hard to make it enjoyable for them. As it was our first time travelling with Thomson we were really impressed with the t shirt, hat and drinks container that were given when we registered.
Finally I have to mention the lovely Ben who was our rep, a young man who is friendly, helpful and was a very talented ugly sister in the reps production of Cinderella!
This was a lovely ten night stay and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to friends. Some reviews have been a bit critical but i wonder what it would take to make these people happy. If you want sun, entertainment and good food and drink in a great family environment the the Playa Mar is not to be missed!
Many thanks to all the great staff who worked so hard in making our holiday memorable!

Room Tip: We were in block 2 not overlooking the pool and it was lovely and peaceful with a view of the mounta...

We had a great time at this hotel, We went on the 15th July for 2 weeks all inclusive. we have been AI before , and the quality of food and drinks here surpassed other hotels we have been to. Only one restaurant which did get a bit boring due to same Walls everyday, made up for it in the quality of food they offered, the great wine , and superb service from the staff, all under the eye of Tolo , perhaps the only downside is that you cannot eat at the pool bar without paying , although it's not expensive anyway.
Bar service was great , we were well looked after by Susanna and the others, local drinks were fine and the G & T flowed freely till 11.30pm whilst in my view a little early , did stop rowdy behaviour .
The thomson entertainment team , Faye, Jonnie. Becky all we good fun except Faye ( private joke ! ) the kids club was good for my 10 yr old and her new found friend, but my 14yr old was typically bored at times . Location is out of town, it is a pleasant walk along the front with refreshments on route , restaurants in town were decent quality . We were pleasantly surprised, this hotel seemed to attract really nice people and we will probably return .

Just back from our 2nd year in a row at the Playa Mar! Travelled with my kids girl 9yrs and boy 6yrs who had a great time in the new animal splash pools with slides! My girl loved the kids club and night shows, the reps work so hard to please all and my hat goes off to them! As this is a Thomson hotel all holiday makers are Brit families so no 6am rise to put towels on loungers however to secure a good lounger it is necessary to get up around 8ish especially if you like to lie at poolside each day! The new style restaurant is very nice and extremely spacious, Donna and waiting staff are so friendly and nothing a problem, ate here most nights 2adults, 2 kids 37erus for dinner which is great as buffet style catering for Brits and alot to choose from, we ate out a couple of nights in main town but approx 80euros or more if u like a bottle of wine! The new Theatre is very nice too and we love staying in block 3 in the 2nd floor(highest) overlooking the quiet road. From hotel into main town approx 20-25min gorgeous walk along the pine walk. Again as all Brits met familes from all over which was really nice! Can see me going to playa mar for years to come. Only 1 negative was the dodgy music poolside which is put on from the waiters at the pool bar! The same CD was constantly on repeat and had to complain after suffering Cliff Richard, Rock around the Clock, Bross and other scary 80's tracks! So anyone who is still to go please take a current CD and give to guys!!!! Wasn't like this last year when we had Americano and good pop songs, despite this Playa Mar still Rocks, Jayne McKie and family Glasgow

We arrived back yesterday from the Playa Mar, 2 adults and 2 children, 6 & 3.

This was our third time at the Playa Mar and whilst there have been changes we felt that they were for the better. During our stay we met families who were there last year which just goes to show that this hotel truly does leave you wanting to to it all again.

The Food;

Excellent,,, you can eat as healthy as you like or not during your stay. Breakfasts - full choice of cereals, pastries, fruit etc and delicious cooked breakfasts too.

Lunch - A great selection of salads, pasta, pizza, cooked and cold meats along with great vegetables, chips, rice etc

Evening Meal - Again, a great selection of salad, pizza, pasta, meat which is cooked right in front of you , sushi, rice, chips, vegetables, soup, ice cream, cakes, fruit etc etc etc,,,,

If you think there is no choice then I must have been in a different restaurant as it was great.
We stayed for 11 nights and for the first 4 we went self catering allowing us to venture into town. The rest of our holiday we went all inclusive which was great value and so easy as the kids could go and get their own drinks and ice creams whenever they wanted without keep on asking for money!

Rooms -

Well,,, what do people want in a blinkin room. To us it's somewhere to sleep and get ready. They are spotlessly kept clean, the water is wet, the beds are comfortable but do you really think you will get a top end Silent Night king size on holiday,,,err , no. they have a T.V too so you can put on the kids channels whilst getting ready etc.
My wife takes her own hairdryer, straightening things and god knows what else but there is a hairdryer to use which I used. OK, it's not the best but you would only moan if there wasn't one at all.

Entertainment -

Please don't take the entertainment in the evening too seriously. Sit back have a beer and go with the flow. It's mainly aimed at the children and on other nights there are tribute bands, magic shows (Fantastic) and acrobatic acts. The entertainment in the evening is great fun and the kids love it.

During the day there is plenty for both adults and children to get involved with. There is a 4pm quiz, 3pm game of table tennis/killer pool, 2pm game of water polo which is great fun and can get a bit physical at times but as I said it's great fun.

There are 2 sets of water slides for the children 6-12 yrs and the other splash pool for up to 6 year olds both of which provide days of entertainment for the kids.

The hotel staff are great and really friendly. The reps are helpful and really involve you with everything.

If you fancy a walk into town, it's only a short walk and really pretty. There are plenty of places to eat and drink with supermarkets dotted around and the usual gift shops selling postcards, ornaments and inflatables.

Overall this was a brilliant holiday in a resort we love with no complaints except when our coach turned up to take us home.

Will we be back next year? Yes.

Have a good one!!

Having stayed at this hotel in July (ALL INCLUSIVE) with a family of 5 adults and 1 child I can say with question it is great value and I would not only recommend but go back.

The facilities for the kids are excellent with a range of pools, kids clubs, soft play areas for little ones and a creche, but what makes this hotel is the staff. Without effort and always with a smile they go out of their way to make you and especailly the children happy.

The food is excellent with a variety of choice and enough to make even a fussy eater content. Meals can be easily changed if all inclusive and worth the extra £12 per day.

Hotel has free Wi-Fi i in reception, is clean, well managed and is close to local shops. Whilst not for singles or couples it is fantastic for familes and I would recommend going all inclusive.

The hotel and staff were incredible, nothing was too much trouble, from the maids to reception and restaurant/bar staff. We stayed at the Playa Mar on a half board basis and found the choice of food at breakfast and dinner great. We intended on eating out in Puerto Pollensa few evenings, but ate at the hotel instead as it catered so well for out 1 year old. The restaurants in Puerto Pollensa all looked beautiful and very sophisticated - and expensive - but didn't seem to cater too well towards younger children. I was dubious about how the food would be for our baby, and the children's selection was fairly limited - alphabites, nuggets, pizza etc, but we chose him food from the adults selection which was always very varied and had a range of fresh fruit/veg/meat/pasta/soups etc, so I needn't have worried.
The apartments we're basic, but had everything you'd need, and were large compared to some hotels we've been to where those on HB or AI would only have a hotel room with no SC facilities at all. The rooms were cleaned most days and towels changed, although I didn't find the rooms very child friendly - lots of cupboards to get little fingers trapped in, and a safety gate over the balcony doors would be good as we couldn't leave the door open without our little one trying to make an escape! We were in block 4 facing the road, very quiet and could hear no noise in the evening from the entertainment.
We chose this hotel as our first family holiday with 15 month old for its range of children's facilities. The children's pool was great, playground too with its cosy coupe cars - our little boys eye's lit up when he saw them, although a shaded area on the playground would be good, as some of the equipment got very hot to touch during the day from being in the sunlight. The indoor soft play room was great, with a ball pit and lots of padded mats for the younger children to play on - only issue was its cleanliness. I'm not sure if it was Thomson of the hotels responsibility, but seemed to left all day without tidying up, we often found food and spilled drinks in there. If it is the parents responsibility to clean up then maybe they should be made more aware. I found the Thomson run parent & toddler classes a waste of time, and a real dissapointment as they were one of the main reasons for booking the hotel. The rep's we're more interested in chatting about their social lives than running a structured session as advertised, this could have been due to low numbers, but I chose not to attend again. The sessions only run 3 times per week once a day, which isn't mentioned in the welcome meeting - which focuses on selling trips/car hire etc. The holiday advisor's were also disappointing. All 3 were unavailable during welcome meetings 10-1130am almost everyday, which seems odd as this is normally the busiest time. We chose to book car hire through the amazing hotel staff instead.
The onsite shop is very expensive - although similar prices to beach front shops. We generally walked to the Spar around 400 metre's further up the main road heading towards Puerto Pollensa. It had a wide range of baby supplies including food/nappies/drinks/milk/wipes - much better than the bigger Eroski supermarket in the centre of town.
Overall we would definitely return to both the hotel and resort, but feel that a Thomson run hotel should have provided a better Thomson service to its customers.

Room Tip: Pool facing rooms are probably noisy from entertainment in day/evenings
