La Sciolta Historic Villa
Reviewed January 31, 2010

We spent 3 weeks with family and friends, and had a fantastic time. The owners were extremely gracious and went out of there way to make our stay unforgettable. The house and outdoor setting were perfect. Furniture was simple, comfortable and perfect for kids. We enjoyed the pool and outdoor dinning. The house is located in the country side but close to many places to visit. We took daily trips, by car, to visit Florence, Rome, Pisa, and many more... We would highly recommend Fattoria La Sciolta and would love to go back.

We (two couples) rented a car in Florence and drove to Fattoria La Sciolta, (one hour) which is outside of Gambassi. The Morellis, owners, are very helpful and presented us with a bottle of wine, maps and information on shopping, dining, etc. During the week we took day trips to Siena, San Gimignano, Cinque Terre, Lucca and Pisa. You can catch a train in a nearby town for additional trips to Florence or elsewhere if you prefer. Querce Cottage, where we stayed, has two baths, two bedrooms (queen beds} and a small bedroom (two single beds). There is a fireplace in the living area, large dining table, well equipped kitchen, attractive patio with hammock and access to washer/ dryer.

We have all seen films about family holidays in Tuscany or read books like Mayes' "Under the Tuscan Sun" against the background of this area's beautiful landscape. Immediately, upon reaching the Villa Edera in the Sciolta Farm estate, you feel transformed into one of the actors. The atmosphere definitely makes the party. Eighteen family members from Switzerland, Belgium, Australia and Israel converged on Sciolta to celebrate our father's 90th birthday. The villa was spotlessly clean, had spacious rooms, a fireplace and the kitchen was better equipped than all our kitchens combined. An invaluable piece of furniture was the long Knight's table in the dining room and in the garden. We laughed, ate good food, danced and drank for a whole week, and the owners,
Gabriella and Christian Morelli, complied to every request, which included arranging for a wonderful "Mama" cook. This secluded villa is ideal for a wonderful family get-together

We stayed at Fattoria La Sciolta for the first three weeks in August 2009. It was most definitely in Tuscany! Location was perfect. Within one hour to Florence, Siena and Pisa and close to San Gimignano. Lovely little towns near us. We rented two of the three villas for our extended family (15 adults and 14 grandchildren - ages 3 months to 17 years). The owners Gabriella and Cristiano were so welcoming and helpful and a pleasure to meet and get to know. The villas are in a secluded part of the property which we found to be lovely. There was lots of space for the children to run around and there was enough room outside for all of us to two of the tables joined together and enough to dishes, etc for us! It was a perfect place for us on this hotel. friends of ours had stayed there with their family similar to what we did (but not as large) and they loved it too. The place was recommended to them by some one else who has stayed there several times. Thank you Gabriella and Cristiano for all your efforts in making this a very special holiday for our family!!

Don't chose this place!
Pictures in internet site are illusory: from its windows it's impossible to see a tuscan hill.
Swimming pool is terrible.

We spent one week in October, 2007 at Fattoria La Sciolta. It is in a lovely spot, very secluded. It is far enough from the main road so that it's really quiet. When we were there, there were no other visitors, and the owners very kindly put us (there were two couples) in a little bit larger cottage which was in a more open area. In October the sun is low, and the cottage we had booked was in a more shaded area. We ate dinner and breakfast there every day, and it all worked very well (I recommend the Pam store in Montaiano). The bedrooms in our cottaage I found to be a little dark, but thre were lots of windows. The bathrooms were functional, etc., but not luxurious. In October the pool (which is a substantial walk downhill) was no longer in use.

If you're looking for luxurious Italian accommodation, this probably isn't it. If you're looking for a place for families to go so you can have some down time in a private setting, it would likely work. The location is great - close to San Gimignano and Volterra, and not too far too Siena. The towns of Montaiano and Gambassi Terme were also interesting. Nothing is really that far in Tuscany!

Would we stay there again? Probably not, just because we would want different experience in a different area - La Sciolta, and the owners were very nice.

If you're going with a big group, I think it would be ideal, especially if you're using the whole space.
