Cabanas Rio Yambala
Reviewed February 23, 2013

We had a lovely relaxing two days here, the cabins seemed a little run down but the setting is fantastic with doors that open out onto a balcony looking over the valley. Use of the kitchen was very helpfull as it is a bit out of town but worth it. We recommend stocking up on some food on your way there as it is a 40 minute walk to town or a 10 minute taxi for 3 dollars. Owners very friendly and laid back.

delightful, original and out of the 'scene' in town, we came back fro the first time in 15 years and were pleased to find nothing had changed (lucky nowadays when revisiting old haunts can bring on tears).

we stayed for a month, and would have stayed longer had we been able to change our flights. long stay prices were almost too reasonable! especially compared to other options nearer town. perfect for getting away from it all, and the walk to town makes the cerveza all the more rewarding.

cabin 2, rustic, snug and self-contained with the views both down and up the valley, and full of creaking character; like being on a ship when the wind's up. never slept better; heavenly. oh yeah - and middle of nowhere wifi!

re. potable water (mentioned above); we were drinking straight from the tap - delicious spring water from the mountains, famously rated for the longevity of the locals. über laid back host charlie advised us to boil it first to be on the safe side but we rarely did.

fantastic walks up into the mountains, even better on horseback.

thanks charlie and sarah, hope it's still exactly the same in another decade's time!

I stayed in cabin #2 for close to three months and loved it. The cabin has a private bathroom and small but functional kitchen. It also has a porch/terrace overlooking the river with great views of the river valley. The bed is comfortable. I could open the big windows on the second level and watch the birds in the morning. The location is beautiful and peaceful. The cabin is perched directly above the Yambala River. I walked into town almost every day (mostly downhill). The walk at a brisk pace takes about 40 minutes. I typically took a cab back to the cabin later in the day at a cost of $3 if I had food and other supplies. I also walked back to the cabin when not burdened with bags of groceries. It is a serious uphill walk from town. Great exercise. The location of the cabins is very close to the entrance to Podocarpus National Park. I often took my lunch up there to enjoy the amazing view while eating or found a nice spot along the river. Charlie and Sarah, the owners, live on the property a bit uphill from the cabins. They are available and helpful when needed but otherwise stay out of your hair.

This property is not for the infirm. You need to be fit or interested in getting fit to stay here for more than a few days. Car access ends at the road by the river. A brief uphill winding hike to the cabins is required. I enjoyed the remoteness and had no problem getting around the property (very well-tended walking paths), but you have to remember the location is the southern Andes of Ecuador; everything is either uphill or downhill.

I usually brought large bottles of water to the cabin from town. I cooked with the tap water pulled from the Yambala River but never drank it straight from the faucet. Showering in it was no problem.

I paid extra to have wireless internet access in the cabin. I had no problem making calls to my family in the USA with Skype.

I have no complaints about anything. I gave a three for cleanliness but please remember this is not a freshly pressed white linen kind of place. My three is not a complaint; it's just the nature of the property. It's rustic. It's in a wooded area. There are insects (never bothered me). I brought a mosquito net with me to hang over the bed and was glad to have it. I had no problem with mosquitos at all during the day or night, but if you are up after sunset and have lights on, bugs will be coming to visit - mostly moths, some of which are very pretty.
