We had just arrived after 2 hard days of travel thru the back door from Peru. What a breath of fresh air!

From the time we arrived we loved the place. Greeted with big smiles and words of welcome. The room was clean and showers had hot water. Wifi worked everywhere in the rooms. the food was good. There is a couple of labs on the property so we got our dog fix.. Yeah!

Highly recommend that you make a reservation ahead of time.

The grounds are quite nice with lots of flowers. The room I stayed in was very nice, spacious and well setup. The bathroom was large and the shower could hold 4 people! The bed was good and I am glad it was for a single - I think a couple would find it a bit narrow.

Although the windows had mosquito screens installed, there were some moths that managed to get in somewhere - not serious, but a bit of a puzzle.

At night it was quiet and peaceful. During the day, the sound of trucks passing by on the road, which is actually quite close by, distracted from the setting. There was also some construction going on next door, and the sound of machines, electric saws and hammering was often heard.

Breakfast was fine, but you might end up with ham instead of granola depending on the day you stay. Dinner was also tasty and well portioned, and the cost is between $6 and $8 for most main dishes.

The view from the restaurant is quite nice - from the room I was in, it was merely OK.

Overall, it was a good experience, but a pair of headphones for the daytime might be useful if the sound of traffic bothers you.

I came here after it was recommended to me by some fellow travellers and I am so glad I did. The setting is amazing with lush gardens with stunning mountain views. There is a gorgeous swimming pool and they offer free yoga classes on most days, plus hammocks to laze about and read. I booked a bed in a dorm and was put in a room with just one other bed so was very happy about that. The bed was super comfortable and the shower was nice and hot. Towels are included too.

The breakfast (included) is one of the best I've had in South America, with the choice of eggs or crepes plus brown and white bread, a toaster, jam and butter They also have fresh fruit and either muesli and yoghurt or ham (they alternate). The food in the restaurant is decent and very reasonably priced (about $6 for a main). The hostel is about a 20-minute walk into town or $1.50 taxi ride.

The staff give you lots of information too, with a whole folder for each guest giving very detailed information about nearby activities and hikes. Izhcayluma is a lovely little spot and a nice change from the regular hostel scene if you are a backpacker. Great value. Highly recommended!

It's difficult to imagine a place more relaxing and peaceful. With its superb views on the Andes, silent location, lovely cabins, luxurious breakfast and utterly helpful staff one really has difficulties in leaving the place. If into hiking, I'd recommend the Podocarpus national park. Take the taxi straight up the mountain and if lucky the driver is willing to wait for you to finish your four-hour hike. The ride there and back costs $40.

This gem of an establishment was created from the artistic vision, dedication and skill of two brothers who backpacked their way through South America and came upon what they thought was one of THE most INCREDIBLE views of the Andes from their experience. In the construction they used as much of the natural material from the excavation of the property as was possible. Izhcahluma, which means in Quechua ¨two hills¨ was actualized and is now situated above and outside the town of Vilcabamba amid some of the best hiking trails for miles around.
This concept in hospitality remains nebulous in terms of its classification. Is it a hostel, a hotel, an eco-retreat, a spa, a home for the community? It can be a point of argument as it is yet all of these things. It is a local spot certainly but its ambience is def cosmopolitan. I once noted as I sat in the common breakfast area that simultaneous conversations were taking place in seven distinctly different languages around me.

What does this place offer? Everything! It is not merely a place to stay but a self-contained community unto itself. It is a place to sleep, to dine, to get massages, have reiki, have your nails done, get your clothes laundered, shop for trinkets from local artisans, have a drink with friends, sit around campfires, play pool, watch movies, go swimming, tan and relax, surf the net, take photos, enjoy lush tropical gardens, bird watch or find a little spot to retreat for meditation. If that's not enough then other things outside can be arranged at the front desk: hikes, horseback riding, Spanish classes, taxi excursions, visit a shaman/a, tours to places like the cloud forest as well as great advice and recommendations for tourism in the surrounding area- all delivered multilingually BTW!!

Is it affordable? Personally, I have never found a place that offers so much for so little. There may be other hostels in this area but no one comes close to this place in terms of what is yours for the price of a nightly bed rate. Just the property alone which is nestled in expansive, lush tropical gardens with a full range of choices in accommodation types from private cabins to shared a cabin 'dormitory' is so much more than the generic hostel experience of this area.

Is it friendly? Absolutely! The staff members are warm and accommodating, well-trained and dependable. They will do all they can to make your experience a positive one.

Would I go back? I would and I HAVE gone back repeatedly as many others have done! I have recommended it to everyone traveling through this area as an experience not to be missed. I personally stayed there for long periods of time and made it my home while working. It is kind of a home away from home for me. In fact, some of my best acquaintances with interesting people were made right here at this very spot!

Oh..and I read a review that said the beds are uncomfortable but do you know that the absolute BEST thing for your body is a very firm support mattress (the reason yogis sleep on the floor to re-adjust their skeletal system)??? Soft mattresses wreak havoc on your posture and are far more unhealthy than firm support...just FYI and BTW

A yoga studio and classes are in the works for the future as well just to expand the ridiculous amount of things that you can already do here!

Hope this helps and if it does please use the helpful review button provided which aids future readers and thanks for reading my review!

Stayed here for 3 nights. The place is beautiful and fantastic in every way. The view is amazing, the restaurant has good food, massages available on site, hiking information, everything is great, except the hard bed. Not sure if it was just our room (#21) but it was rather hard to sleep on. We got decent 75 minute massages for $22, went on a 4 hour horseback trip to a waterfall with Tasca tours (they have an office in town on the main square but we booked through the hosteria for the same price $25, the trip had amazing scenery but it was a bit challenging for a novice horse rider like myself). They also have a nice pool but it was too cold to use. The staff is excellent as well, especially the manager. We went on a ridge hike (can't remember the name but it was the blue one, hike D) and they provided us with a map and the hike was spray painted with markers along the way so it was pretty easy to follow, it was a great hike with a short section on a high ridge with great views. Definitely a great place, just not sure about the beds in other rooms. It felt like an expensive spa resort to me.

Room Tip: We stayed in room #21 and the bed was really hard. Not sure if all the beds are the same or not.

First of all, staying in Izhcayluma will take a bite from your budget, it's not cheap. But what you get for what you pay is amazing... Incredibly friendly and helpful staff who will help you organise every activity you want to do in Vilcabamba. Certainly one of the best breakfasts in Ecuador. The most pretty rooms and bathrooms, shiningly clean. A huge garden with swimmingpool. A very good and reasonably priced restaurant. Very cheap massages. A cosy bar with widescreen tv and loads of DVDs. And much more.
Tell the staff they have to kick you out after a couple of days or you may never leave.
