Great hotel if you plan a trip to Hunderfossen family park or need a place to sleep in this aera. The hotel was build prior to the 1994 Winter Games at Lillehammer, and is not new. But the facilites are ok, even the room we have was quite small. Good value for money, many activities for kids and a seperate kid's buffet in the restaurant. Definitive not a place for a romantic stay without kids!

Service is good, although they seem to be short on staff. I had to ask at the reception to get service in the bar, and waited for 5 minutes before someone showed up. Reception area and bar recently renovated, looks cool but most furniture is somewhat uncomfortable. Bar has a decent selection, provided you can actually get service in the first place.

A nice separate recreation area with pool table, air hockey table, an arcade racing game and a limited edition Elvis pinball machine (a rarity nowadays) is a plus.

Rooms are tatty with sunworn curtains and paintings, torn wallpaper and lousy vent system, but might be to your liking if you're a 90's nostalgic. The bed was comfy though. I checked in after midnight when food service was closed, and decided to check the mini bar only to find that most of the snacks were past their BBE date. It could be worse, my colleague told me that most rooms don't even have a mini bar. Very clean rooms, but mini bar price list missing and magazines and hotel information were very worn. I had a room at the end of the hallway, and had to open the hot water on full for about 4-5 minutes to get some hot water in the morning.

I don't like the plastic cups and soap dispensers that are the norm in the rooms at Choice hotels, give me a proper glass and shampoo and shower gel bottles instead.

Breakfast is nothing special, avoid the horrid goo coming out of the juice dispenser. More coffee options would be a nice addition.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a tub to get a larger and quieter room at the end of the hallway, at the cost of...

Early in the season, and few peoples at the resort. We got the pianoentertainer for our selves and had a tremendious evening.

The very best was dinner in their food studio.
A somiliere told us about different wines and got served tapas. Then the hotel manager showed his kitchenskilles and activated us in making of some realy good meat:)

Its 15 minutes walk to the slopes, but every 30minutes its a free bus

I have visited this hotel a few times and always found it a pleasant place to stay. The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean, the food is good and the hotel is very well located for local outdoor activities.
From the start this hotel gives a good impression, walk into a large spacious hall, but with a log fire in one corner adding a cosy feel and woodsmoke smell to the air. The downstairs facilities are good and clean, and the restaurant, whilst being quite full of tables is not too cluttered.
The food is not that varied if you stay several nights but was always quite good enough that I never felt bored or tired of the choice.
The rooms are small, but clean and tidy. My one BIG problem with these rooms is the small single beds, and they are small. They nearly prompted me to make this a 3* review, but I decided I couldn't condemn a full star just for the one item. But if you are a big person you may want to get a double room regardless (not a twin/single bedded room).
The hotel is also handy for local amenities, a few fast food places and the slopes. A good base to operate from in the surrounding area.

Room Tip: go for a double bed, even if single

I read the review by pavigrass and don't recognise the hotel he describes. The other reviews seem closer to the mark. I'll flesh this review out a bit later when I get time but, for now, let me just suggest you choose dates about 6 weeks in advance and look at the cost of getting by train to Edinburgh from London and back and the cost of a 4 star hotel there then look at flights to Oslo / Torp / Sandefjord and add a maximum of £42 for the return train to Lillehammer (check prices at nsb.no). Last time I checked, London to Edinburgh return by train was £120. Torp to Lillehammer was 199NOK each way. Stansted to Torp was £25 return so, mad as it may seem, you can get from Stansted to Lillehammer and back for £65, a little over half the London to edinburgh train fare. In terms of "bang for your buck", 2 nights in an Edinburgh 4 star was quoted as £215 whilst Quality Hotel and Resort Hafjell was £85 a night. Roughly, you can have 3 nights in Hafjell for about the same as 2 nights in Edinburgh PLUS access to duty free shopping you wouldn't get going to Edinburgh.

How would I describe Hafjell quickly? It's as far as I want to go to get away from it all without being so close I feel as if I haven't been anywhere. I'm a bit bored of visiting European capital cities and I'll be going back to Hafjell. I like the darkness from the hills since I like Astronomy and hate light pollution. Since the whole hotel was built for the winter Olympics (1992 I think) there are lots of winter sports options nearby.

If you fancy a bevvy, the booze is expensive but it is in UK hotels as well but because you go through customs, unless you're an alcoholic, you are allowed to take into Norway 1 litre of wine, a litre of spirits and 2 litres of beer which should be enough for three nights. The supermarkets over the road from the hotel sell good beer in cans at 22NOK a half litre.

As I said, look at the quotes, do the sums and be prepared for the shock Norway isn't nevessarily as expensive as you think it might be.

I'll tart this review up later.

Room Tip: It depends on what you want. Some may want a room close to reception, close to the car park, close t...

Stayed here for two nights over the New Year. Staff were very friendly and assisted us when we asked to change rooms. The first room was a disabled room that seemed to smell a little but no fuss about moving.
Rooms ok, clean but only separate beds on 2nd floor.
The food and service was great, big thanks to the little waitress with glasses! The manager was also very helpful. Very child friendly.
Would I stay again??? yes

We stayed here when I was 8 months pregnant along with our two toddlers. It was the perfect hotel for a family!!! They had a lot of great activities for the kids, which is awesome for parents so you can rest before and after a busy day at Hunderfossen. Although it wasn't the nicest pool, it was better than no pool at all and a lot of fun for the kids! We loved the breakfast there as well. Not to mention their wonderful guest service - we had originally booked at another hotel but the room was unavailable when we showed up. This hotel made a lot of accommodations to help get a room set up for our family during the busiest season and gave us a discount on behalf of the mistake the other Quality hotel made!! WE'LL BE BACK!!!! :)
