Just returned from a two week stay, and can say that is was a great choice of hotel,we could not fault the hotel in any way, we were met on arrival and helped with our luggage by Manolis to our room which had the most beautiful view over the mountains and the pool.
Visillis could not have been more friendlier as were Stavros,Sophia and Manolis.
The hotel was very clean and the services very good, excellant poolside bar, good breakfasts, very quiet location, and a great place to go to relax.
We were taken out to dinner by the family and went to the saturday barbecues on two occasions which were very good.
We would definately reccomend this to friends and family and would like to thank all at the hotel for making our stay so good.

We stayed at the Sofia from June 2nd to June 16th. They are trying very hard to provide an enjoyable holiday. Everyone connected with the hotel was helpful. The family organise a barbecue every Saturday, which costs only 10 euros each, and there is plenty to eat. It also gives you the chance to meet both other guests, and local residents. Vasillis also arranged a meal out for us at a local restaurant, which again was excellent value for money, and a lovely evening. The hotel is simple Greek - rooms are whitewashed walls, beds are firm (I suspect if this were a five star hotel they'd be called orthopaedic), air con is available, and we had a balcony with a view to the sea. The shower room is typical of Small Greek hotels in which we've stayed, and not one which appeals to us. Could do with a longer shower curtain, as the floor does become wet, and potentially dangerous. But we knew that was possible before we set off. Still would be a good idea to keep the floor dry. There is no choice at breakfast, but something different most days. We never had stale bread - it was always soft and fresh, and three hefty chunks each. There was always good coffee (not always the case in Greece), home made jam, and any of fried eggs (not swimming in Greece , sorry grease), boiled eggs, omelettes, cheeses (local sliced) tomatoes, etc. We asked for extra coffee every day , and had no problem. Usually Manolis served us, and we never had to wait. It was a pleasure to eat breakfast outside. Just a word about fruit juice. As we invariably seem to experience in Greece, we are surrounded by fruit trees. It was apricot season when we were there. Why can't we have proper fruit juice for breakfast? This is not a criticism of this hotel, it's a criticism of every Greek hotel in which we've stayed - about 12 at the last count. Baffling.
The pool area is peaceful. As this was a quiet time of the year we sometimes had the area to ourselves. It's spotless, it has plenty of beds, and we had our pick. Vasillis runs the bar, and offers snacks from 12 until 3. There are plenty of drinks to be had. Cats have also been mentioned. Yes, there are cats - Greece has lots of them -but, being independent beasts, if you don't bother them they'll carry on without you. The only time you see them in any number (about six) is, surprise, surprise, when there's food about. We happen to like cats, so we enjoyed their company, but , generally, if you don't like cats, steer clear of Greece. And Lola, the cocker spaniel, deserves a special mention for being the softest dog in Samos.
The resort stretches for about 2 kilometres I would guess. You wouldn't call it pretty, but it does have a long, uncrowded beach with plenty of beds for hire at 5 euros a day for two and the parasol. One problem when we were there was lack of public transport. Good idea to have taken the driving licence. The buses start about mid June when the schools finish. A major plus is the availablity of good tavernas. We all agreed it's impossible to eat badly here. We tried eleven, and everyone was excellent. We paid between 17 and 28 euros for 2 beers, Greek salad, 2 main courses, half a litre of wine, and a couple of ice coffees. And we got something free everywhere - maybe an ouzo, a small carafe of wine, a baclava - terrific value. If Martin Lewis gets out here he'll be telling everyone about it. There are several supermarkets, if you're self catering, all with a wide choice. However, still waiting to find a good Greek wine.
This is not an accessible spot. It's not that far from the airport, but the route is long, high and tortuous. It takes well over an hour from the get here. Once you've arrived it is peaceful, and we had blue skies every day.
For the hotel, it's a shame it's not better placed. It offers personal service, a peaceful environment, and good value for money. I can't understand complaints about greasy pool, poor service. and stale bread! Not to mention it's being run by Germans! I mean Stavros and Vasillis from Berlin!
We enjoyed ourselves, and if it's peace you want, we'd recommend others to try it. Booking direct may be the best way.

Room Tip: Room 122 has a sea view.

Spent 2 weeks at the Hotel Sofia, and will try to give the most honest review we possibly can.
Firstly, the hotel is clean, but very very basic. Very dated furniture and decor. Could do with a major facelift. The rooms were kept clean and towels and sheets changed regularly by the excellent English cleaner. Pool area was nice , and the pool itself was clean.
We were very disapointed not to be met on our arrival, and found ourselves dumped on the side of the road and had to drag our suitcases 400ft up a concrete road to find our hotel. We were shown to our room by the owners youngest son, who seemed very pleasant.
After we unpacked we went to the pool bar for a drink and met the eldest son, who was also very pleasant.
The following morning we went down to breakfast at 8o'clock to be met by the owners wife, who seemed to be allergic to mornings! Very sullen faced, and not given a very friendly greeting, which turned out to be a regular thing.
After sitting there for 15 minutes, we were eventually asked if we wanted tea or coffee.Again, this occurred every morning, and to us, not acceptable.
It got to the point that we stopped going for breakfast, because she made us feel so un comfortable. (There were other guests that were treated so much better than us!)
The breakfast itself was laughable. We appreciate that this is a 2 star hotel,(should be a 1 star really) and didn't expect a full english, but stale bread and a lump of cheese, or a fried egg swimming in fat is not our idea of heaven. The offer of a second cup of coffee would have been nice.
The final nail in the coffin for us was as we walked out of the hotel to leave, she stood at reception, looked down her nose at us, and didn't have the decency to say goodbye or thank you. Purely because of HER ATTITUDE we would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We came independently via Athens to Samos the last week of May. From the time the plane door opens you can smell the herbs of Samos. You are picked up by Stavros from Samos airport and driven through the beautiful scenery to Kambos which at this time of year is full of so many flowers.. It had been 2 years since we visited last. Our welcome is so warm and genuine. As we arrived near breakfast time we were given our greek breakfast. Any eggs are from the familys chickens, very fresh. The bread is locally made. Our room is at the back of the hotel with a view of the mountain.
The Hotel Sophias rooms have the mod cons (not that we even bother to turn the television on.) Everywhere is scrupilously clean. The pool is crystal clear and the surrounding gardens are full of coloiur. There is a beautiful cool large lounge with a large selection of books. Vascilli manages the hotel, nothing is too much trouble for hm or his family. My husbands attempts at Greek causes many smiles. The beach and sea is very clean and if you like walking there are many walks to find. When you come back tired and hot there is your little room clean and cool. The shower is efficient and simple. After this you can sit on your balcony, go down to the bar where there is usually someone to chat to have a swim or simply relax. There are no huge hotels and I dont think Thompsons and the like do justice to this part of the island. For the frist time we used taxis and found the drivers helpful and friendly.
We have always found Stavros Sophia and their family extremely kind, honest and
welcoming. Vascilli and Maneoli speak very good English. They make our holiday together with the people we meet at the Sophia.and in an around Kambos. Hopefully we will be back in two years time, there will be Stavros waiting to meet us and our very special holiday will begin.
If you come to the Sophia you will experience a Greek holiday NOTan English B & B
in a Greek style.

Room Tip: All rooms the same.

My wife and I have just returned from a fantastic week at the Hotel Sofia, from the moment we arrived, the enthusiam and willingness to help from all the staff was there to be seen, it is easy to see why many guests come back year after year. nothing was too much trouble,Despite its 2 star rating by Thomsons, the hotel can show other higher rated establishments how to look after their customers, the hotel is based a short distance from the main resort road, far enough to give you a peacefull nights sleep, My entire stay in the resort was something I will remember for the rest of my life, everywhere I visted the response was always positive, the food/service in all the resturants was execelent, everyone in the resort was always willing to see you.The resort is on the other side of the island away from the main tourist resorts of Pythagorio and Kokari and does not get a faIr crack of the whip from Thomsons, however back to the hotel during our stay we where invited by the family on two occasions to dine with them, once again these where memorable occasions and formed a lasting relationship which I intend to continue over the coming years,I arrived as a tourist and left as a family friend and cannot wait to return, I feel so strongly and pasionate about the people on this side of the island and urge tour operators and airlines to look at the resort of Kampos as a long term comitment, the resort has the inforstruture the commited people ,the hotel Sofia the jewel in the crown.
