Just visited for a couple of dinners last week-a quiet time before the vacation rush. I deliberately returned to this taverna after eating here a couple of times last October. I always start with the grilled bread and tzatziki. I am usually not much of a bread eater but their grilled version with sea salt and oregano is really good. Had fresh fish on the first night and boureki on the second-portions are large and hearty. Also, if you have the chance, order the fried zucchini-a great way to start the meal. The wine is plentiful and the house carafes are decent and inexpensive. To top things off George and his crew are always extra helpful and friendly and eager to please. It's always fun to watch someone else order and then wait for one of the crew to race off on his scooter to get the freshest supplies. If you are in Kissamos I highly recommend a visit to this establishment-no view but the food and atmosphere will make up for it.

best of the best..!!All foods were very tasty and the white wine so good that we did not want to leave. The atmosphere with traditional cuisine and music is the best combination!

Open on a wild and windy night in late October, this was, for us, a real find. The owner (I presume) was welcoming (but not OTT- no, I'm not your new best friend!) and informative- making sure we knew what the dishes were and which specials were available.

We could easily have eaten anything on the menu- in fact, a 'meze' comprising of small portions of each dish would have been a great way to try them all! As we live on a Mediterranean island too, it is easy to spot the 'typical tourist fare' and what isn't, and this, most definitely wasn't mass catering for people who won't be back to complain. I'm only sorry we're not back to have more from the menu.

Extra care was taken with details such as the bread, olives, the salad (which was crammed full of tasty things such as Cretan rusks and rich juicy tomatoes),and as for the delicious walnut cake for pudding (on the house!) well, there certainly wasn't much on the bowl to wash off after we finished! The bottle of raki which appeared put the finishing touches to a great eating evening!

I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant- go on, stretch your legs a little and walk out from the main drag of restaurants, you won't regret it.

As the title suggests, in this tavern you will get the best food on the island. We come now since opening in 2006, and are excited every time from the excellent food. Whether fish, meat or vegetables, everything is fresh made. The service is very friendly and accommodating. The prices are reasonable in relation to the quality and quantity.
Giorgos, see you next year, same time, same table!

If you are looking for the Holy Grail of Mediterranean food – look no further. You will find it right here, in the small tavern of Stelios&Katina in Kissamos, Crete.

Forget all other places in Kissamos – we have tried several, and although still very good none can compete with this small, family-run business.

Pay special attention to the seafood and vegetable dishes. The vegetables come from a garden, which is also run by the family. The fried eggplants and zucchini are fantastic, just as is the stuffed eggplant. The Boureki is mindblowing, a must-have while there.

But what you really want is the seafood. If you are a seafood enthusiast Stelios&Katina is like Disneyland. They offer fresh fish, which you feel was just moments ago swimming in the sea. Shrimp Saganaki, battered and fried calamari, grilled octopus – all these dishes will satisfy even the most sophisticated palate. The winner here is for me the cattlefish – grilled, with lots of olive oil and a little onion – simply to die for.

If you don’t like seafood I can’t help you. But the meats are also very tasty:)
Add to this the friendliest staff on earth, great extras such as grilled bread, lovely desserts and a shot of Raki at the end and you get an outstanding experience.

To sum up – cuccina povera at its very best! Suffice to say that my wife and I came back to Kissamos just for this place.
