The way to Balos beach is only about 15 Km from Kissamos, but about 10 of them are on a non paved road. There is also a cruise from Kissamos to Balos beach, but it leaves at 10:30 and returns at about 18:00 - this was too much for us, so we decided to go by car. It was hard to reach with our small rented car - it took us about 45 minutes of very slowly driving (10-15 Km/h). A higher car or Jeep are preferable. You have to pay 1 Euro/person at the middle of the road, and at the end you reach a small parking lot, which was almost full when we arrived at about 13:00. The toilets there were closed when we arrived (end of September). From the parking lot there is hike of 15-20 minutes on a foot path - mostly built as stairs - downward to the beach (medium difficulty - we saw also families with small children). Good shoes are recommended, but not necessary.
The views of the beach are magnificent! The area is built like a lagoon with very shallow waters, so suitable for all ages. My wife and I think it was the best beach in western Crete (we went also to Falasarna and Elafonisi), and maybe in the whole island.
In summary: If you are in western Crete, and like beaches - this is a must!

I use to traveling around the world, but i have never visit before a place like balos, not so far...We arrived from Kissamos late at night, so we decide to spend the night renting a room in the village kaliviani.Next morning, we went downstairs to have breakfast and one the wall, we saw a photo-poster, it was that magnificent lagoon, balos....we asked Yiani, the owner of Kaliviani hotel, how can we get to balos. so....9km by car or moto and then you follow the path fo 1,5 km.After 45 minutes from the hotel we saw the place that we also spend the last days of our vacation.Balos lagoon is the real paradise.don't miss it.

If you watch the place from the path on the mountain next to lagoon, you feel like two worlds collided and a white sand path resulted from this impact. The color of each of the two parts of the lagoon is changing from white, near sand, to turquoise and then green and blue, like a palette where nature has put all the possible colors of the sea water. At the end of the white sand path a coliseum of rocks is rising as a guardian of the two parts of the lagoon. Walking on the white path ,when you get close to the water, the sand becomes pink, as if the sand wants to reveal its beauty to the crystal clear water. Watching the lagoon from an upper point from the path on the mountain, the people from the white beach are looking like small insects, giving the impression that man is a so less important in this immense Universe.
