Blue water and white and pink sand is what makes balos most amazing! For a great part of the lagoon water is at ankle, tops knee level. Hardest part is to get there, easiest way being by bus from Kissamos. Still, you will have to climb down, and back up afterwards, a 30 minute distance on a rocky road. You can always use the donkey service, otherwise. There is a canteen there for refreshments and a few umbrellas, but otherwise it's quite natural. It is a must-see if you are in Crete.

Even thought it was a long drive up, and a long and rocky hike down the path to the beach, it was so worth it. When I first saw the view of this amazing beach on the path, it took my breath away. The beach does get crowded in the afternoon when the boats arrive. Although the hike back up the trail was tough, I took many short breaks, and there was the cantina where parking was. Balos is a must go-to if you are in western Crete.

First of all, this beach is amazing and you have to go if you are in western Crete. I was concerned about how to get there after reading the reviews about the road conditions. We ended up driving and were very happy with that decision.

As other reviewers have stated you start by heading west on the main highway through Kissamos. Then follow the clear signs for Balos beach. The road will eventually turn to an unpaved dirt road and there will be a €1 toll per person. From there it is about a 30 minute slow drive (usually 15-20 kph) over bumpy rocky terrain. The entire way feels very safe and there are guardrails at the steep drop offs. If you have never driven on a dirt road before you may be concerned, but cars and car tires are made to handle this and it will be fine if you go slow like everybody else. In the parking lot we saw every type of the smallest rental cars available on the island like Hyundai i10s and Atmos Primes.

The best part about driving is that you can go early and/or stay late. There are lots of people on the beach when the tour boats arrive. It was really great to also be there when it was not so crowded and not to have a deadline to leave by. This was one of the highlights of our trip and highly recommend it.

Extremely beautiful nature, very nice beach. If you go by car, might have a hard time walking the 30min distance to the beach, though you can as well use the donkey service. It's a great place to spend time, but get's very crowded with people after the ship comes around 2pm.

If you have a rented car, then it is better to drive to the pier in Kissamos to take the boat to Gramvoussa as it is not a particularly long or difficult drive, plus you get to visit Gramvoussa and Balos on the same trip. Parking is ample and free on the pier. From there, buy a ticket to the boat, somewhere around 20EUR. The boat ride is in itself a relaxing experience because you get to see the view and they offer decent selection of food and drinks. Rental of parasol from the boat is only 4EUR but you have to pay the refundable deposit of 5EUR. First stop is Gamvoussa which offers a great hiking experience up the old fortress. We have taken some of our nicest pictures there. It has inspired wonderful princess and knight fantasies on our children. Next stop was Balos, It is a very amazing place as the sand is light beige and pink and the beach and the lagoon are very clean and not so very deep. Parents of small children could relax here as there is no immediate danger of drowning for the little ones. There is a glorious combination of mountains, sea, lagoon and terrain in this place.
