“Balos Lagoon”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

There is a magnific beach in Crete and you can't go there without visitng it. But take care if you are going by car because the road is not so much safe and you should better take the boat from Kissamos.
Also if you are going by car take into account the fac that from the parking area you have to go by foot to the beach, around 45 minutes, down from the mountain and of course when you're coming back, you have to climb the mountain.
So the boat it's safer and easier than car!

“Balos Lagoon”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We visited in june, be aware that it can get windy on the boat trip. There are two ways of getting to the lagoon. The first option is the boat trip from the harbor of Kissamos (around ~22 euros / person) or you can drive by car. We opted for the boat trip which takes you along the coast. It will stop on the island of Gramvousa where you can visit the ruins of an old fort. Its quite a walk up there pack a bottle of water with you. The fort itself is nothing special but the view from there makes the hike worth it. Next stop for the boat is the lagoon itself, which is a must see if you travel to Crete.

“View is breathtaking!”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Balos is gorgeous when you opt to take the hour drive through a rocky terrain and then hike down to the beach. There is a 1 euro entrance fee per person upon entering. The water did smell a bit foul and it was a little dirty but the view is amazing and its surprising how shallow the water gets. To rent a umbrella and 2 chairs t threw us back about 6 euros, but it was much needed for the relaxation. Do note that the hike up after such a relaxing time at the beach is gruesome and not for the faint of hearts. We might try the cruise next time to avoid the Hikes this time around.

“Beautiful, and big enough that it doesn't seem crowded”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

We walked down (easy enough for me and my 3 kids aged 10 - 16). Walking up was a bit rougher. But we had a great day. Took a taxi boat out to Gramvousa to snorkel around the shipwreck. Good times. The snorkeling around Balos Lagoon leaves much to be desired, but it's a beautiful spot with warm water and fun to just play around or relax on the beach.

“Big disappointment”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

It was horribly crowded, the water was green rather than blue, the beach in parts rendered disgusting by sea weed and clumps of petrol that stuck to your shoes.
I guess it could be a really nice place if there were not as many people in the spring or in autumn because the mountain view is great. There are small shells to collect and if you're lucky there might even be a parasol to rent for 7€. There is no shadow. Absolutely not worth the 25€ boat trip.
