“Almost heaven”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

I was blown away by the beauty and the landscape of Balos lagoon. Have seen pretty many places in my life, but this was something very special.

We rented a car (a jeep) and arrived at the parking area about 10.00 am to start the 30 minute easy trek down. The much feared dirt road - at least to me - was a peace of cake. I did not find it dangerous. Surely you need to drive slowly, but in any case the views are so spectacular, so what´t the point to hurry. The only issue is that some rental companies or your insurance do not allow to take a regular car to a dirt road, so if something happens, you might be on your own and without insurance coverage. Good to check this. Most people, however, arrive there in their normal (2 wheel drive) cars. But one needs to be careful particularly at the end of the road. The parking area is the worst with big rocks that could potentially damage your car. You can park your car some few hundred meters before the parking area to avoid this.

They charge a 1 euro per person entrance fee to the dirt road.

The point is to experience the lagoon, before the massive ferries loaded with hundreds (if not thousands) of day tourists arrive. This means to arrive there around 09.30-10.00 and you have some 1-2 hours of near privacy (other potion is to come around 5 pm). After that (between 11-16 hrs), needless to say, it gets very busy. It is a large area, so you don´t feel crowded, but the magic of Balos is early in the morning. Also the best spot to take photos is high on the hill, when you have perfect back-light. In the afternoon the light is not so good anymore.

Two sunbeds and an umbrella costs 6 euro. There is a canteen where you can buy beer, sandwiches, fruits, water and softdrinks. The canteen is reasonable priced (beer 3 euro, sandwhich 3 euro etc).

A walk uphill takes some 30 minutes. With few resting stops it is quite ok, unless you have a knee etc problems.

Doing Balos with a private car and trekking down is HIGHLY recommended.

“Nice, but with many question marks”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Balos is definitely a great natural place with extraordinary colors, great water, superb landscape. However, it is very hard to get there (either dirty road + hard walk or 1 hour boat) and it is incredibly crowded and, inevitably, dirty. Would we suggest to go? Hard to say, but we would rather recommend to pass by and find another destination.

“Don't miss Balos”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

I took the usual tourist trip to Balos beach (18-25€ depending on where you buy the ticket, the harbour being the most expensive). Ok, it's very touristic, there's plenty of people there, but it's still worth it. Departure around 10.30 am, arrival 1st stop at Gramvoussa island after 50mn. Here, some people were brave enough to climb the pretty tough path to the Venitian fortress, or you can just have a swim in a perfect bay. Then back on the boat and stop at Balos wich is very close. Even crowded, it's impressive. The water goes from all shades of green and blue, the sand from white to light pink. No shelter from the sun, but you don't stay very long and if you need you can go back to the boat. The landscape is dramatic : high cliffs, rocks, mediterranean plants... If you can, and if the sea is not too rough, try to take the first "little" boat (they might ask you at the harbour) : you'll get there first and have half an hour with less people. But if the sea is a bit rough, maybe you'll prefer the "big boat" (it's easy to spot it), since the journey will be easier. Anyway, it's a splendid place, don't miss it.

I can't describe the water there. Water colours are fantastic. I have traveled there two times. First time when my husband and I go there we drive there by scooter. Road there is exciting but you can see beautiful sights going up to the parking. Dirt road is like 5 km long and after that you have to hike like 2,5 km down to the beach. Hiking trail is easy to travel. Second time I travel to balos lagoon by boat. I like quietness and I thing there was too much people at the same time.
