Maybe not the first thing that springs to mind - having an Italian style lunch on the esplanade of Sant Feliu de Guixols on a busy Sunday lunchtime (it was both market day and in the middle of the town's annual festival) - but it was a good experience.
On the plus side - the food was well prepared, simple and tasty. We started with a Caprese salad (great Mozarella) and a veal carpaccio. Main dish: Penne arrabiata (pasta with a perfect bite and a well balanced sauce - not too spicy. No house desserts were tried, but also looked as if they had been prepared with care. The star was the wine - "Otello" an authentic red Lambrusco - recommended.
On the minus side, the decor and furnishings. Be ready to sit in a type of extension built onto the front of the building with glass windows surrounding the dining area. This is small (as were the tables) - so the atmosphere is "cosy" (you can listen to the conversations on the next table easily). The advantage here is that it is bright and you can see all the action in the street and out over the bay. However, the manager on the day of our visit thought it would be a good idea to try to air-condition the whole of Sant Feliu (this being the beginning of August) - we sat with the air-con going flat out with the main doors open onto the street!! The Cloakrooms were perhaps the smallest I have ever seen - if you go, check out the hand washing facilities - aircraft toilets have more spacious arrangements! The waiting staff were generally Italian - which added to the Italian theme. However, the waiter taking the order was a little brusque and spoke only Italian - a bit of a drawback if your clientele are mostly local or northern European tourists.
Pricing was reasonable for the location, food and service - it is fine if you are looking for a quick informal lunch while on holiday.
