“Really good food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

Unlike other places that are far more expensive, this is the real thing!!!

You will get regional specialties here and nicely cooked and presented. There's often live music too!

“Authentic Chihuahuan Cuisine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Every area in Mexico has developed their own type of cuisine over the years. This particular restaurant specializes in strictly Chihuahuan cuisine. When I say that they wrote the book on Chihuahuan cuisine I mean that they literally wrote the book; "Cocina Regional de Chuhuahua". Oh yeah for cheap thrills the guy there that looks like Don Quixote is Jesus Vargas. He's one of the top five experts on Poncho Villa in the world and can be seen on PBS's The Storm that Swept Mexico.

“Definately worth it, a very special place in Chihuahua”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2012

Calicanto is a great place to have a good Mexican beer, a tequila or a more local drink called sotol-- it is made from a different cactus than tequila; sotol is very tipical of Chihuahua and Calicanto has the best in stock-- I recommend Añejo-- aged-- Sotol Coyame.

The menu is original with delicious popular northern dishes, well worth trying, like a Quesadilla Trapichera or a Sopa Arriera. Two of the owners are the authors of the only book published on the cuisine of Chihuahua-- for those who read Spanish, this book not only has excellent recipes but relates a cultural history of the region. Very interesting and well done. I believe they sell it at the Café.

There is music many nights and there are some very good musicians, for instance Olga who often signs on Saturday.

Before taking the train or when getting off, treat yourself to an original and local experience. It is well worth the visit and it is a part of Mexico and Chihuahua not easliy perceived by passers by.
