“A Big Disappointment - needs improvement”
Reviewed December 23, 2009

Indeed a disappointment. The place looks promising since it is still new and they were in the process of adding structures and amenities. However, the service itself sucks. Everytime we ask a question to the staff, they always tell us to ask the front desk instead. Was that some kind of protocol? As early as 7:30 in the evening, all was already quiet and we thought it was already 10 PM for the atmosphere. Nothing to do at night really and the cable tv only had a few channels. Room accommodation looked cheap compared to the amount we paid. The mattress for the extra head (we were five in the room) was not delivered and when we were about to sleep by 9-10 o'clock, one of us had to go down to the font desk since no one was answering the phone and ring the bell like hell - which unfortunately remained unanswered. And so we had to share beds like sardines. Good thing though, they agreed to deduct the extra head fee. Our room's veranda had a nice view and was a good place to relax at night while sharing pleasantries but the veranda light did not work. Hot water was not available! they told us to wait but hell, it consumed our time and patience. They tried to compensate and brought pails of hot water to our room but it was all too late. Our boat to Anawangin was a bit pricey because other hotels charge the same but it already includes Capones and Camara islands. Yeah, for the price of one. Snorkeling set was way expensive for P600! It was even cheaper in Palawan, Bohol and Davao! The pool water was cold -can they do something about that? There were two pools but we can only stay on one because according to an employee, the other pool is seven to 10 feet deep - not child friendly. Food is expensive so we expected a lot but their sinigang was not very good. So salty! Took them even an hour of preparation and we only ordered four dishes! The only good thing that happened was during breakfast with the male and female waiters who were friendly and can't be blamed for the non-availability of the food we ordered. By the way, their wifi sucks.. big time! if you want people to go to your hotel, do something about it! People want the value they paid for!

We went resort hopping in Zambales area ,hoping that we could find a place to stay for our next trip. And we ended at the place called PUNTA DE UIAN. Cool place and a show off to anyone....We are pax of 7 at that time-3 kids and 4 adults. We had lunch there and found out the menu a bit pricey.
I was sad when my food arrieved in front of me ...My pasta was soggy and it's not altogether AL DENTE and full of PARMESAN CHEESE !!!! To tell you the truth, I just tasted it and leave it alone. Don't ask me how much it cost...
Gambas? oh no, nobody wants to have a kidney removal or a dialysis of kidney malfunction! I doubted if the cook had a taste out of it, sooooo very salty !
When you pay that kind of menu price, certainly you will expect an a fair taste for the food as it should be.
Be aware that your kitchen is the source of all the meals served in your resort.
Update please for the sake of...My overall rate, PRICEY .

If there’s one word to describe Punta de Uian, it’s “inconsistency”. Before getting into details, you should know that we REALLY DID ENJOY our time at PDU. Overall, it’s a very pleasant place to stay, and we would go back there again if the opportunity arose. Now, into the details….

The 3-hour trip to the resort was hassle-free; the NLEX and SCTEX help, but even the drive through the towns of Olongapo and Zambales was so much nicer and relaxing than Batangas (for example). We arrived one hour before check-in time, and were told that our room was ready. We didn’t get the room we’d reserved and confirmed during our booking (which was a Double Deluxe facing the beach), but they were able to adjust for us on the spot.

We went down to the restaurant and had the first of several pleasant and satisfying meals. Some might find the menu a bit expensive (we spent about P4,000 on food for 4 people for the whole weekend, not bad overall), but there is a wide variety of interesting food which was all well-prepared. After lunch we wandered the grounds, which were very nicely designed and groomed, and then to the beach, a wonderful (dark) powdery sand with some exciting wave action. The surrounding green hills and neighboring Cameras and Capones Islands add to the charm of the area. After exploring the beach, we swam in the pool, which is both attractive and clean. A great day, and it was still only 5pm. We spent most of the next two days either on the beach or at the pool, rain or shine. Also, the boat trip to Capones was a great decision!

Now for the “inconsistencies”. The outer architecture and landscaping is so charming that you feel disappointed when you’re in your room. The room was clean and fresh (no moldy smell!), but the choice of paint and décor looked cheap. The wooden furniture, similar to what you would find being sold along the provincial highways, was already breaking apart (the chair and decorative table already had chunks missing). The finishing on the doorways and furniture throughout the resort is not adequate for the climate; humidity and usage have already worn it away, and it looks low-quality (note: the resort is only two years old). They do have a stereo with iPod input cable, but the TV was out of service due to the recent typhoon (although I was told by phone that the typhoon had not affected them at all).

While we thoroughly enjoyed our food, the staff was constantly contradicting itself. One person said that the complimentary breakfast can be anything on the breakfast menu, but the next day we found out it’s limited to certain items. One person said that coffee and juice are bottomless, the next day somebody wanted to charge us for every cup we drank. Fruit shakes in the restaurant cost P100-120, but ten steps outside the restaurant, where they MAKE the shakes, they cost P60. The small bottles of water on top of the room refrigerator cost P77 each (an outrageous price) according to one person, but then she was corrected by another who said they are free. No big concern, as they have free water dispensers near the restaurant. However, as a guest, it got frustrating that we could never seem to get a straight answer.

There is definitely room for improvement at Punta de Uian; furnishings and internal communication are the two big areas. Regarding the restaurant, a breakfast buffet (or open breakfast menu) would be the best way for them to go (bottomless coffee is not too much to ask for). It's things like that which make guests feel more welcome and at-home.

However, there are many excellent things about this place, and I would recommend it to most of my friends. If you are going to the Subic area, do yourself a favor and take the extra 20-30 minutes to drive to Punta de Uian. It stands out over most of the resorts in Subic any day!
