“A peaceful step back into colonial Morpeth”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2011

Savannah on Swan is a coffee-shop downstairs and a gift/antiques shop upstairs, located right next to the old wooden white bridge in Morpeth. Housed in a grand old convict-built building, the Bond Stores, it has a rear verandah and garden area that looks onto the Hunter River and the farms of Phoinix Park. It is open 7 days a week - for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays and for lunch, with simple but good food, as well as the customary cakes, tarts and scones and cream for morning tea. Of all the coffee shops in Morpeth (an historic town about 2 hours drive north of Sydney and approximately 35 minutes from the vineyards of Pokolbin), it is the nicest - with friendly and efficient staff and good service. Sitting out the back on the verandah with my mother (whose grandfather was the mayor of Morpeth back in the grand old days when steamships cruised up the river and Morpeth was the major port north of Sydney) is a joy; the river can be seen through the gums and the farms fan out in the distance; there is space and time to sit and think and nature tweets away in the background as a resident lizard skitters out of the deep brickwork in the summer to bask in the light. You can sit in the sun and while away the time as cars head across the beautiful old bridge - one of the few left standing in NSW. It's definitely the place to head just for some peace and quiet and a nice scone and jam. And, yes, they do more exotic things - like macchiatos.
