“Family friendly”
Reviewed May 1, 2014

Stayed at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley during the Christmas holidays, was impressed from the beginning. The 3 bedroom villas were roomy and comfortable. Heaps of activities for the kids and the restaurant by the pool was great and well priced. The whole resort had a great atmosphere for the Christmas holidays and had something for everyone. The Crowne Plaza is well recommended and definitely family friendly.

A group of 6 ladies including myself stayed here in a villa recently. After booking via phone months ago and assured we had a portacot booked for our infant, there was none in the room. When we finally got to check into our villa at around 9.45pm, our keys wouldn't work. We rang the hotel, and were put on hold for 15 mins before someone answered, and were put through to another department, who hung up on us. So two ladies went for the 10 minute walk back to reception while we tried again. We were waiting for the best part of an hour before we could get in, and we only got in because the girls returned from their walk to reception with new keys. 15 mins later a staff member appeared, who was quite dismissive, and non concerned about the surprise waiting for us on the table (a short curly black hair… use your imagination about the type of hair that may have been..). He did eventually send up some biscuits and sachets of hot chocolate as a "pacifier", but there was no real attempt to make up for our hour of waiting outside with a baby not being able to get in. The following morning we realised there weren't enough towels to go round, and rang reception to get more. They never arrived. We rang room service to order a piece of toast and a yoghurt for our baby- it arrived- and cost $20.50!!! Overall- the staff were unhelpful and dismissive. Luckily we had a wonderful visit to the Tea Tree spa while we were there, and a great meal at the Lovedale Restaurant in the hotel- otherwise the entire weekend would have been ruined by our stay at this hotel. For $600 + per night, I expect better. Never ever again will I be staying here.

We stayed for 2 nights over the Anzac weekend in a hotel room (not a villa)

We arrived at the hotel at 9.30am on the Friday morning, just to have a quick look around, as we did not expect to be able to checkin at that time. ! Only hiccup at checkin was when I asked if we needed a voucher for breakfast and I was told that our room rate did not include breakfast - when in fact it did, as our prepaid voucher clearly showed. The girl apologised and updated our booking immediately, so we avoided a problem at breakfast the next morning....

The room was clean and comfortable, albeit a little bland and worn, and it overlooked the tennis court. As it was the end of the school holidays, there were masses of kids everywhere - fortunately, we weren't planning on spending a lot of time at the hotel itself, having come for the vineyards, so we were able to avoid most of the noise....

We had dinner in the Lovedale on Friday night and this was were the BIG crowd was - we weren't that hungry as we had eaten a rather large lunch elsewhere, so we decided on just the soup and bread . This turned out to be a wise choice , as the wait time for all the cooked items - burgers, pizza etc was 40 minutes!!!! No way would I have waited that long in there for food with all those screaming kids!!!!! Saturday night was much more civilized and we were able to enjoy our burgers in relative calm and enjoy the view out over the golf course.

The breakfast buffet was great - wide range of choices and also a juicer, so you can make your own fruit and vegetable juices. Breakfast also included special coffees such as cappuccinos, which is quite rare in hotels - usually an additional cost and you can have 2 or 3 if you need that much caffeine! The staff were all very pleasant and friendly at the buffet.

negative points - the positioning of the table tennis and pool tables. These are right outside the door that goes to the pool - in particular , I found the billiard table to be a big problem, as when you walk out the door, you find yourself having to dodge the pool cues - there is no room to walk around (due to hoarding covering up a building extension). I was hit on 2 occasions by a pool stick, when the person playing pool did not bother to check behind them if someone was walking by. It is also unpleasant to walk out that door into groups of people standing around drinking , smoking, talking loudly (and swearing) - I'm not even sure if smoking is permitted in that area, but they were. It is right next to the table tennis tables, which seemed to be occupied most of the time by unaccompanied children . Surely, there must be a more suitable location for the pool table - like in a room, away from a high traffic area and children?

The pool is lovely and big - but cold!!!!! The jacuzzi was overrun with unaccompanied children most of the time so unfortunately, that was a no go zone for us.

The only other problem we had was at night - there is really nothing much to do - outdoor checkers and chess or tennis or drink in the bar - after a day on the vineyards, enough was enough!. This is not just a hotel issue but the area in general. I would have loved to be able to do something after dinner - a night time wildlife spotting tour for example, None of the wineries seem to offer any options at night and there are no tour operators except winery shuttle buses. So, we had 2 rather early nights in front of the TV.

We would definitely stay here again, but next time, a mid week stay may suit us better

This hotel was fine. The staff were friendly and the room was clean.

It was quite expensive and unless you have a vehicle (We didn't) its $25 Aus dollars into the nearest town.

Breakfast was nothing specia, We had food in our room and it was nice

It was for me just like any other business hotel and I think it would have been sacrificed some stars for a more authentic stay

I stayed here with my mother and two young sons. We booked a hotel room, as we weren't planning on spending a lot of time in the room. The room was comfortable and quiet, and there was plenty of room for the 4 of us. It was great to find a hotel with a separate bath and shower! Hotel facilities were fantastic for families- my boys loved the pool and the train that travelled around the resort. Great location and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Location is great, rooms are reasonable, extremely long waits at the bar for food, garlic bread was frozen in the middle, no cocktails after 10.30pm, golf course lawn mowing machines wake you up at 5am, worst table tennis racquets I've ever used (plastic, yes I understand why but you may as we'll not play). All in all it is semi reasonable but for the prices they charge it has a lot to answer for.

Hi 11rennie11

It is disappointing the read that your stay with us did not exceed your expectations.

The points you have raised regarding the food, early morning mowing and racquests have been passed onto the appropriate team for discussion.

We do hope this will not put you off a return stay with us.

We had stayed at the plaza before but this time booked the villa and definitely felt the villa was far more comfortable, a home away from home. Very spacious and modern and with the kitchen facilities, easier for the family during mealtimes over the Easter weekend.

The resort is situated close to all facilities in the hunter and we had no trouble really enjoying the pool, tennis and basketball courts & surrounds including a round of golf for our boys.
I would definitely recommend it for families

Room Tip: Number one villa may be a bit close to the first tee off, if you want to sit outside, ask for anothe...
