“Rustic cabins with all the mod cons”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2009

Creel, Mexico was our first overnight stop of an 8-day package tour bound for the Copper Canyon that started and finished in El Paso, Texas.

Pedro, our tour guide told us not to expect 5 star at the Hotel Villa Mexicana, which really was more like a Kid’s Summer Camp. However, it turned out to be a lot of fun and each couple were allocated a log cabin with all the mod cons including TV, rocking chair, veranda and two big (though lumpy) beds.

Also there was a bathroom in each cabin. Plus a small table, two stools and a coffee-maker. Really, the cabin was a pretty decent size when compared with a 5 star guest room, but it was just a little bit rough around the edges. “Rustic” is definitely the best word to describe them.

Hey, it was clean, quiet and we both slept well with no complaints.

Both dinner that night and breakfast the next morning were served in the property’s “La Cantina”. No complaints there either, and all of our 45-strong tour group seemed to enjoy this short overnight stay. Unlike the previous reviewer, we did have plenty of hot water and did not experience the rude manager. In fact, all the staff were very courteous and friendly.

Our local community college makes once or twice yearly trips into Copper Canyon. On our way, we spend one or two nights in Creel. We usually stay at a motel close to the center of town. It was full, but they recommended the Villa Mexicana to us.
We stayed in lovely, cozy cabins. Not everyone had hot water although every cabin had its own hot water heater. Hot water is pretty much a luxury in Mexico so we were not entirely surprised.
Our only real complaint was the manager. We had a number of elderly people on our trip and drove our vans and trailers on the roads up to the cabins to unload luggage. The manager was rather rude and unreasonable in berating us for doing this. He wanted us to park in a big parking lot and carry everything from there. Also, we had made phone reservations for rooms and requested a maximum of 14 rooms and stated that we would probably need less than that. The manager attempted to force the trip leader to pay for unused rooms. He had plenty of cabins left to rent - it was not a case of his having to turn away customers. We did not pay for those extra rooms and informed the manager that we would not stay there again, solely due to his behavior. What was otherwise a wonderful experience (although very expensive) was certainly colored disfavorably by one person.

FERNANDOCOMENTS, Manager at Hotel Villa Mexicana at Creel, responded to this review, June 10, 2009
Dear Guest:

The reason why we do not let anybody drive to the cabins is for security purposes due to the fact that are many children and older people walking in our interior streets and sidewalks.

The hot water is not an issue for us and we found a problem because of the weather during your stay.

The cabins that you did not use were not charged to you and yes we had to turn away on new reservations that we had reserved for you for those dates.

Anyhow, we are really sorry about this manager´s attitude and we appologize for any inconveniene we may cause you.

Thanks you for your comments and we are glad you like the hotel and our cabins.

Stayed here one night as part of a Caravan Tour. This property was previously know as Pansion Creel. Flat screen TVs have been added in the rooms and there is currently construction of additional cabins. Because I was part of a tour, I'm not sure what current prices are. I loved the cabin and would rate it as a "4" but I believe the average person would rate it as a "3". There are 2 double beds and a futon in the cabin. A coffee maker, tea and instant coffee are provided. There is a small eating table with 2 small stools. Its perfect for a mountain cabin. If you are looking for a "spa" atmostphere, this is not the place for you. However, if you like cabins with front porch swings, check this place out.
While there, we ate at the property restaurant. Very bland. I believe you would get better food someplace else.
