Reviewed August 8, 2012

we have stayed here a few times before this recent trip. nice to see that they have completed the swimming pool and other rooms which have been in construction for the last year or so
they have a new manager who was the perfect host- eager to please- he has ) unfortunately i cannot remember his names- years of experience running top class places in galle but came back here for his love of wild sri lanka- extrodinary guy kept us entertained with stories- he even jammed with simon garfunkle !! that aside the rooms spacious and comfortable ( beds are a little hard but hey )- we enjoyed the buffet which was new but then since my last trip a year ago- they are now catering for package tours and yes the hotel was full -
we especially enjoy the surroundings as we are keen bird watchers- loads to see until sunset
with a gorgeous lake everywhere whicch you can literally wade in
it is like a mini safari- we have stayed in tissa hotels - expensive and cheap but between safaris
you either stay in your room or eat-which i i find boring and much prefer this place as i can get out , use my camera, photo birds and beautiful sunsets

recommended

yes i am a little upset that this place is now on the tourist map- because i got so used to having the place to myself!! knowing all the guys who are great

Room Tip: avoid rooms in front of the pool

We are a family of three and really enjoyed Wila Safari. The manager was extremely friendly and helpful, and was good company of an evening (the hotel was very quiet when we were there). Our room was large, clean and cool, backing on to the beautiful swimming pool. The staff were friendly to us and also to our little boy, taking the time to play football with him etc. It was a very warm welcome. I would agree that there is not much to do in the local town/village, but Tissa is a cheap tuk tuk drive away, and we enjoyed the peace at night. The hotel organised a safari to Bundala for us, and the guide/driver was superb. Likewise the wake up call at 4.45 and the carefully packed lunch. The food wasn't amazing, but we would say the same about many places in Sri Lanka, so this was never an issue. For us, the location on the lake, away from the hubbub of Tissa, was perfect.

Room Tip: The room we had by the pool was fantastic.

This is a fine place to stay, only complaint was our air con.in both bedooms kept cutting out but management were very attentive and called out the engineer.
Coach tours use this hotel but this didnt affect our stay as they were arriving late and leaving early !
Good value for food and drinks from a very special waiter (Tikery)who seemed to work every hour of the day.We went on safari and he brought us coffee, tea and packed lunches at 5 in the morning,we last saw him working at 11.30 the night before !! This man epitomised the friendlyness of Sri Lanka along with the gardening couple who stood and smiled with us most mornings (we had no Sri Lanka and they had no english).
If you go on safari I hope you are fortunate enough to get the driver we had, this was worth the trip on its own..
This was maybe our best stop out of the 4 we made. From the manager to the lady who sweeps up the leaves (is this a national obsession?)Everybody wanted you to enjoy the visit

Room Tip: Ask for a room by the pool, its surprisingly quite ,

This is a good accomodation alternative for people who want to visit Yala National Park or Kataragama. The location may look a bit remote; i.e. there is not much to do around, apart from taking a walk to the not that interesting small town nearby or around the lake or watching the birds all day long - still we liked it a lot, because of its peacefulness and the large clean rooms with the nice lake view.

The manager and the other staff of the hotel are very kind and they try to do their best to meet the wishes of the guest; however I must still say, the staff is not very professional; they are not used to the standard service routines of a good hotel. Anyway, when requested, they still try to do their best. For example, when we were not very satisfied with the dinner, we talked to the hotel manager and explained what we exactly wanted, and the next day it was done perfectly.

If you are looking for a peaceful place to relax a bit, after the long cultural and natural visits done in the inland of Sri Lanka, then this is the right place.

Room Tip: We have checked almost all rooms and decided for the room at the ground floor facing to the lake.

We traveled as a family of 3 and stayed 2 nights. The hotel is built on the banks of a lake and the view is quite good. There was no recreational facility other than a 20' swimming pool.No garden space. So forget about any out door activity. The rooms were large and spacious with 2 double beds ideal for a family to squeeze in. The A/C packed up on the second night and I did not get any sleep after that. The cleanliness could improve. Make sure to check on the bed sheets before you lie down. The food was prepared OK but very basic. No selection. The flies were very annoying.
The main road is built on the bund dividing the lake. Very good jogging track. But do it before 6.30 am as it gets really hot after that.
