“Fed kangaroos and petted a koala!”
Review of Parndana Wildlife Park - CLOSED

Parndana Wildlife Park
Reviewed April 9, 2012

My husband and I had a great time here. It was so fun to see all of the animals and have the opportunity to get up close to the animals, feed kangaroos, and even pet a koala bear. As a tip, get here right at 9:00am when it opens and you will likely be the only ones here (before all of the tour groups) and wait for the woman to clean out the koala area. She let us come in and pet the koalas.

We wanted to visit the parndana wildlife park at Kangaroo Island but once we got out f our car we were ambushed by the lady of the office. We were looking at a grey goose before going in the office and she came out of the office screaming: don't look at the animals without buying a tickets. She was extremely rude and yelling at us. Animals are kept behind fences. Dont waste your time at visiting this centre but go to a beautiful one in of the other places in Australia where you can pat the animals without being intefered by busses full of other tourists.

Very nice place, good animal education for children and adults who haven't experienced wildlife.

This isn't a zoo where you stand behind behind a cement blockade and gaze at the animals over a trench. At the Pardana Wildlife Park you have the opportunity to get into the pens with many of the animals. It's along the lines of a traditional petting zoo in the US, but instead of llamas, sheep and goats you get to feed and pet kangaroos, koalas and wallabies. They have a wide variety of animals, and it is here that I was introduced to a bird I never even knew existed, a cassowary.

From what I understand most of the animals here are rescues - in many cases raised with tender loving care from infancy by the owners. My daughter even had the amazing opportunity to hold a 6 month old wallaby joey that was saved from her momma's pouch after she was hit by a car. A definite must see with kids.

This is not the Melbourne Zoo. Obviously. This is a private zoo run by a couple of people, on a small budget, and yes it shows. All the cages are made out of (ugly) metal. The bird cages are a bit small. [Given how friendly there birds are, I assume they are abandoned pets, so rather than focusing on how small the cages are, focus on the fact that at least these birds have a home.]

None of that matters to a 4-year-old. She loved this place. She got to feed some kangaroos, pet a koala, and see a number of other interesting animals up close.

A couple days after we returned home she said she wanted to go feed the kangaroos again! She liked it so much she was willing to get back on a plane, travel over 20 hours, just to do it again. That's the sign of a success.
