We were travelling from Kaikoura to Blenheim, and we saw on the atlas a reference to "The Store". We hadn't a clue what this was, so we looked out for it. We found it to be a lovely little cafe overlooking the sea. We didn't have any food at this time (too early in the day for us), but the coffee was excellent (although it took some time to get it). The location is really lovely. We sat out on the platform below the cafe, with a clear view of the sea. It was very restful to be able to do this. After our drink, we wandered down on to the beach - which was really good. The big downside is that the toilets could do with a little cleaning!

This used to be an excellent cafe/restaurant in a fabulous location on the Kaikoura coast. But something has happened and the standards have declined. Service was good and the location is still wonderful but the food isn't what it used to be. A paucity of cabinet food choice. I had a lamb and mint pie. It was taken from the food cabinet cold and microwaved. It arrived with a small amount of salad greens and what looked like Heinz sauce. The latter I didn't bother to try. Needless to say the pastry was limp, doughy and chewy. The lamb content was pleasant enough but ruined by the casing. There are alternatives at Ward and at Kaikoura which we will use in future.

We stopped at the store on Saturday on the way to ChCh as we have done many times before. We had tea for two , the tea pot was water stained and could of done with a polish and the knifes and forks were the ones with riveted handles and one worries about what lurks beneath the handles , time for new stainless steel cutlery! She who must be obeyed had a blue berry muffin which had the vote of approval as we're the fries. I however had the beef pastie which had been reheated in the microwave and the pastry was like shoe leather, unacceptable. The filling however was tasty. The setting is great and no completion so with a little upgrade would score better. I hope the Store take this as constructive comment

We had lunch on one of the hottest days this month. It was more important to get shade than be in the sun!
The lunch we had was counter food and coffee. It was just what we needes and was filling, well presented and tasted. The other highlight was being able to go for a walk on the beach with the birds and the sea.

This is one of our favourite places to stop when travelling between kaikoura and blenheim, being great for either lunch or drinks and a snack. On this occasion I had the Thai beef salad, which was excellent. Good quality thinly sliced beef fillet with fresh salad ingredients and a pretty authentic Thai dressing. The freshness and variety of the ingredients in the salad was particularly impressive. Portion size was perfect for lunch. My partner had the fish special of beer battered cod with chips and salad. The fish was really nice and fresh, the batter was crispy, there weren't too many chips and the side salad was generous and fresh. Pricing was a little on the steep side at $28.50 but the portion size was generous and the meal was delicious. We would thoroughly recommend this place as a perfect lunch stop or for a break when travelling SH1 up the coast. Ample car parking and great sea views. Indoor and outdoor seating - can be windy outside so choose your spot carefully!
