“Old traditional place”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

This business has been around since 1892...and at the particular place at least since the 1930s. It has retained that old, traditional atmosphere, which is rather refreshing paradoxically when everything around us is constantly changing. You can enjoy the place in the summer in the back yard under the humungus trees, or in winter, inside by the fireplace. You can also opt to sit in the front part on the street tables and enjoy the coming and going of the people in kifissia.
They have all the traditional Greek pastries for which they are well known, the 'galaktoboureko' (milk pie) being one of my favourites, and they are also well known for their 'tsourekia' (sweet bread), which are in great demand every day. You can also buy fresh milk and yogurt made by them, as well as yummy marmelades and other sweet things.
It is a fast paced place in the shopping area, as they have a lot of every day clientele, but once you sit in the back garden or indoor sitting area, you can relax and feel you're going backwards in time!
It is the most authentic Greek place you can go to in Kifissia to enjoy your Greek coffee and sweets, chat with friends, or just observe the crowds passing by.
As you may guess it is the old folks preferred gathering-meeting spot, but because of it's central location it also attracts families, and working people taking a quick break. Because of It's character it also attracts artists and actors, musicians etc and you might often encounter them sitting next to you.

“Popular for tsiurekia and holiday breads”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

This historic coffee shop in Kifissia is pular for making the best tsiurekia sweet breads in Athens. many other sweets and cookies to try as well. Coffee shop is old and needs redecorating so opt for some other more picturesque coffee places in Kifissia. That is, unless you want to try the Greek coffee as originally served at Varsos.

“Delicious time warp”
Reviewed April 15, 2012

Varsos was over the years our secret and most delicious hideaway in Athens. It is well known to many Athenians who love tradition and now we are giving this secret away to all our friends on Trip Advisor. Varsos is a bakery/patisserie/cafe/museum piece located in Kifissia, a northern suburb of Athens. Established in 1892, it continues to go strong today and not much has changed. You can shop and choose from innumerable breads, cakes, pies, sweets and desserts - all delicious, of the highest quality and sticking to the traditional Greek recipes. Otherwise, you may sit in the large cafe area towards the rear of the very spacious shop together with other old timers whiling the time away, or in the backyard and order any of the delicacies from a lengthy menu. The items on offer are mostly sweet, but there is also a selection of savory Greek pies (cheese, spinach). Order a selection and a beverage (authentic Greek coffee for example), sit back and enjoy. We particularly love the millefeuille, the rice pudding and the kadaifi, but everything else is terrific.
The decor seems not to have changed at least from the sixties, and you get the feeling of being in a time warp. We have been there many times and the waiters and other staff are all veterans who have been there for many years. During our latest visit we came across our first rookie waiter who was learning the ropes.
The best way to get to Kifissia and to Varsos from central Athens is by metro. Kifissia is the last stop on the Green line, about 35 minutes from Omonia. From the metro station walk through the park to the main thoroughfare (Kifissias), cross it and enter Kassaveti street. Varsos is just down the street on the left. You can't miss it. I don't recommend driving to Kiffissia by car. Traffic can be very jammed at certain hours of the day, street parking almost non-existent and parking garages expensive. Taxis are not expensive, but they too suffer the effects of traffic.
However you want to get there, do go. You won't be sorry.
