Firstly there is no need to go to agencies in Mendoza for a wine tour. Jump on the "green train" which takes you just outside the gates of
Bodegas Lopez - it's a 2 minute walk and the cost of the train journey is just 2 Pesos each way. Lopez Winery gives you everything you want and expect from a winery tour. Firstly you arrive in the modern yet established / traditional working courtyard. You are directed into reception and shop, from there you have your tour of the very impressive winery. Our tour was conducted by two lovely girls Paola and Paola. They spoke perfect English and was very helpful, friendly and knowledgable throughout the tour. Afterwards you taste several wines including their own champagne and you decide if you wish to purchase - there is no obligation. Afterwards you can visit the museum along with the cellars. There is a fantastic restaurant on the top floor which overlooks the winery. Nearby there is an olive oil refinery which you can visit along with several other wineries. Just arrived at Bodega Lopez and then they will direct you.

My husband is a chef in the States so for our first day in Mendoza I booked the Express Sommelier course and got a full tour of the winery and Champagne factories. It was so thorough that it educated us so that we could understand the wine making process that much better when visiting other wineries the rest of the week.

After, we did a private tasting and wine blending to make our own demi bottle to enjoy at our hotel. The tasting comes with a nice plate of cheese and charcuterie to play with the flavors of each varietal.

Once you finish, make sure you book the tasting lunch. Three courses paired with the wines. Enjoyed each course with wines and includes coffee to finish. The entire activity takes about 4-5 hours. Probably our favorite day while in Mendoza.

We toured this fine winery first on our trip to Mendoza. The tour guide was excellent and the wines were varied and all delicious. Especially nice, is the wine tasting/purchasing room which has lots of couches and seats overlooking a beautiful landscape.

There are many interesting Bodega's to visit in Mendoza but unfortunately we made the wrong choice. As we were short in time, the Tourist Office advized us to visit the Bodega López which is relatively easy to reach by taxi (close to the main square in Maipu). The Bodega is well styled and very clean and has recentelijk been modernized. We decided to have the Gourmet lunch in the restaurant at 250 peso's which is a common rate for a 3 course lunch including wine. We started of with a cheese entree and a white wine (no explaination which wine) which was freezing cold. Alarm bells sholud have startend wringing at that time. The main course was a traditional Beef de Chorizo which we both ordered 'medium' but arrived 'well done' and was served with probably the worst red wine we have tasted in Argentina during our 3 week trip. Had they served us this wine in a tiny and remote village somewhere up north we would have understood but this was a winery! The dessert was OK (chocolat) and was served with half a glass of champagne. Apparantly the bottle was empty and as lunch was over they did not bother to open a new bottle. I asked the Hostess whether this was normal in Argentina and she answered that serving half glasses was quite normal. During our 3 week stay in Argentina we have never experienced such bad service, such bad meat and bad red wine. We are convinced that Bodega López has sent away all their cooks and have let the Marketing department take over the restaurant.

This was an awesome tour. We just showed up one day, not knowing when the next tour would be. We had missed the only tour in English that day but they were great and accommodated us anyway. We toured the entire facility and tasted some great wines.
