What a find! Very classy ambience, delicious food at great price, served with beautifully crafted wines by a lovely, unobtrusive but knowledgable waitress. We will be back. Best so far in Maipu, Mendoza.

March 18 took the Mendoza Centro to Maipu trolley train (Metrotranvia) 25 minute ride for $2.5 pesos accessable from the top end of Av. Sarmiento off Plaza Inpendencia. You must have the Red Bus touch card to ride public transit. Get off at the end stop and on the same side take the cross road to the next intersection and turn left. Watch for the Lopez signs. Walk 1 km and turn right at the next major intersection. You will see the trolley maintenance yard on your left at this intersection. The winery is about 2 blocks ahead on the left. A second option is catch a G9 bus from Centro. One marked 151, 161 or 162 and get off after the bus turns right at the trolley maintenance yard.
The winery is a large producer but they have an excellent tour (free) in Spanish or English that takes about 1 hour. It includes a tour of the barrel rooms, grape delivery area and the bottling plant. The displays of vintage wine making equipment is extensive. The wine tasting at the end is in the new building near the entrance. The building is nicely put together and the bathrooms are spotless. The building, opened in 2010, houses a restaurant on the second floor, bar on the main and a museum and tasting room in the basement. A Spanish tour was about to start and an English one 30 minutes later. We opted to join the Spanish group. Likely missed a lot of detail but the picture taking opportunities were still available. We tasted a Brut and a Malbec. Both were OK. We also had lunch in the Rincon de LOPEZ restaurant. A chicken and pork off the ala-carte menu with a bottle of Semillon Blanc and small bottle of water. The food was very tasty. Total bill with propina was $200 Pesos. The wine at $29 Pesos was a steal. A most enjoyable way to spend few hours. We did not book in advance and that was not a problem.

Of course there are other wine varieties and chicken or seafood and (cough) vegetarian, even pasta, but you come to Mendoza for Malbec and steak right? Well you get it in generous portions and excellent quality at Bodegas Lopez. Definitely take the tour and lunch package and get a bus or a driver so you can enjoy the wines and a siesta on the way back to town!

The tour was extensive and informative of their factory where they produce wine. It was cool to see it being bottled but the tasting afterwards was a bit disappointing as it was only two wines (one white, one red) and very small pours.

As we have been enjoying Lopez´products for over 40 years, we could not pass up the chance to visit Bodega Lopez. The commercial scale of the enterprise was a contrast to the botique wineries we had visited the day before. Luncheon in their dining room was excellent with tasty food and red wine
