“Wonderful Find”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

El Secreto is a jewel. I like sophisticated, authentic and unique small hotels and this fits the bill. The staff and owners are so welcoming and accommodating. Stylishly decorated, immaculately clean rooms with comfy beds, linens and bathrooms have the feel of being a guest in a beautiful Mexican home. Breakfast on the patio is outstanding - totally delicious and served fresh from the kitchen.

Speaking of the patio, all rooms open onto the fabulous, stone walled, private courtyard complete with gardens and sculpture with tables and chairs for relaxing. Everywhere you turn there is an impressive focal point be it sculpture, blooming flowers, cacti and succulents, bonsai--a feast for the eyes and spirit. The art gallery is a total bonus where you can view well selected work by talented artists. The owners have put so much care into creating this special place.

Perfect location, talented, bilingual & friendly staff, beautiful, comfy rooms and gardens, delicious breakfast, so much attention to detail and very reasonably priced. What a find.

Room Tip: I loved the small balcony in my room.

Nick and his staff at El Secreto have created a fantastic refuge from the crowds of Guanajuato and San Migeul de Allende. Excellent breakfast served just outside your bedroom door in a beautiful garden. Comfortable room with all the necessary amenities.
I was visited daily by "Chispa", one of the pet dogs on the property and enjoyed his companionship.
Nearby are the ruins of Cinco Senores and Santa Brigida mines which are fascinating as is the town itself. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Thanks, Nick!

I would recommend staying here just to meet Nick, the owner, who was over the top helpful and friendly! He gave us great advice on our trip plans, helped us rent bikes, and gave us the BEST breakfast we had in Mexico.. including room service coffee. The cactus gardens are beautful. We loved the electric heated featherbed topper as its quite cold there at night. But the rate seemed a bit expensive to us with rooms B and C a bit rustic (lamp falling apart), worn and not super clean, and water pressure in shower being terrible. What was the biggest turnoff was seeing birds in cages all around the property. Seemed odd since there are so many free birds around the jardin, why do they feel the need to have caged birds?

Room Tip: Room C is on top with lots of light and great views. Room B is downstairs and close to the gardens...

This place is amazing--magical grounds that have been beautifully laid out by, wonderfully comfortable rooms with great beds, and breakfasts that are the best I've had anywhere. The hospitality given by Nick, one of the owners, is first rate and genuine. He truly cares about his guests but is never intrusive.

Tucked away in a little corner of the main plaza (hence the name El Secreto?), you will find peace and quiet (okay, except for the occasional noise of a far away chicken or two). There's also a very nice art gallery here to take a look at--you never know what you might fall in love with!

I highly recommend El Secreto and thank Nick for all he did for me while I was there!

Room Tip: There are 3 rooms here and while I only saw 2 of them, I think all 3 would be equally comfortable.

Great owner (Nick) and staff (Juan and Leo) make Secreto a very pleasing place to stay. The rooms are good size with fireplace and wood provided. Breakfast included some of the best fruit we have had in a long time.

Room Tip: Get three couples together and get rooms A,B and C, and you can have your own private court yard wit...
